Overview
KGW Schweriner Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH is a German mechanical engineering company based in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Founded in 1948 as VEB Schweriner Industriewerke, the company has a long tradition as a supplier to the shipbuilding industry in the Baltic Sea region. Today, KGW is a key manufacturer of fully assembled steel tubular towers for the international wind energy industry, as well as a producer and assembler of built-in component systems. The company operates from a 52,000 m² site with approximately 25,900 m² of hall and assembly space, employing around 100 people. Its quality management system has been ISO 9001 certified since 1993. KGW processes about 20,000 tonnes of steel annually and has the capacity to produce more than 250 tower sections per year, with diameters up to 4.5 meters, section lengths up to 35 meters, and section weights up to 80 tonnes. The company has worldwide references from well-known wind turbine manufacturers. Since 2006, KGW has been part of the Wilms-Gruppe, following an insolvency and takeover. The managing director is Johann Erich Wilms. In 2010, KGW acquired Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft (LMG). The company continues to serve the wind energy sector and acts as a contract manufacturer for marine equipment, including for HATLAPA.
History
The company's origins trace back to the "Eisengießerei Gebrüder Klingebiel" (Klingebiel Brothers Iron Foundry), founded in 1888. In 1935, a multi-purpose hall was built on the outskirts of Schwerin, initially used for political mass rallies. From 1939, armament contracts were taken on, and in 1944 the industrial site was leased to Dornier Flugzeugwerke. After World War II, the site was taken over on 16 May 1945 by "Torfindustrie Heinrich Sander". In late 1948, the machinery factory was expropriated without compensation and transferred to state-owned enterprise administration. On 24 December 1948, the VEB Schweriner Industriewerke was founded. In 1951, it merged with the "Schweriner Eisengießerei und Reparaturwerkstatt" (formerly Klingebiel's operation, also nationalized) under the name VEB Schweriner Industriewerke. After a visit by Czechoslovak dictator Klement Gottwald to Berlin, the company was renamed "VEB Klement-Gottwald-Werke Schwerin" in his honor. From 1952, it became a key supplier for the shipbuilding industry of East Germany, active in development, design, manufacturing, and assembly of cranes, steering gears, and winches. In 1979, it became part of the VEB Kombinat Schiffbau Rostock, based in Rostock. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the company employed up to 1,300 people and was one of the most important enterprises in Schwerin. In 1990, the company was restructured and renamed "KGW Schweriner Maschinenbau GmbH". On 1 April 1993, it was privatized. In 2006, following insolvency and takeover by the Wilms-Gruppe, the current "KGW Schweriner Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH" was formed. The managing director is Johann Erich Wilms. The marine division (manufacturing of winches and steering gears) had already been sold on 1 April 2006 to HATLAPA Uetersener Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG (which went insolvent in 2019), which initially continued it as "KGW Marine GmbH" and then fully integrated the products as a branch in Schwerin. Today, the company manufactures steel towers for wind turbines from Nordex and General Electric, and works as a contract manufacturer for companies such as HATLAPA. In 2014, the company processed almost 50,000 tonnes of steel and produced 800 tower sections, with each tower consisting of three to seven sections. On 1 October 2010, the company acquired Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft (LMG).
