Overview
KG Media (Kompas Gramedia Group of Media) is the main mass-media business unit of the Kompas Gramedia Group, one of Indonesia's largest and oldest media conglomerates. It brings together the group's newspaper, magazine, television, radio, printing and digital publishing assets under a single operating umbrella, and describes itself as Indonesia's leading media group and business-solution ecosystem. Its portfolio spans the national daily Harian Kompas (founded 28 June 1965), the financial title Kontan, the regional newspaper network Tribun Network, the news portal Kompas.com, the television channel KompasTV, the radio operations of KG Radio Network, and licensed magazines such as National Geographic Indonesia. The group's roots reach back to the founding of the Kompas daily in 1965, and KG Media states that it draws on more than 55 years of experience in media and broadcasting. It claims the largest audience in Indonesia, reaching more than 64 percent of the country's population across its combined print, broadcast and digital properties. KG Media is led by CEO Andy Budiman, who joined the Kompas Gramedia organization in 2003 and has headed KG Media since 1 August 2018. A leadership team of business-unit and corporate-function executives runs the individual brands, including Harian Kompas, KompasTV, Kompas.com, Kontan, Grid Network, KG Radio Network and Tribun Network. Beyond traditional publishing, KG Media positions itself as a business-solution ecosystem, offering media and marketing solutions to advertisers and partners. It has invested in digital transformation, including the adoption of AI and automation across editorial and commercial functions, and in sustainability initiatives such as its "Lestari" campaign platform, which covers waste management and other projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The company is privately held within the Kompas Gramedia Group and is headquartered in Jakarta.
History
KG Media is the mass-media business unit of the Kompas Gramedia Group, an Indonesian conglomerate whose publishing heritage dates to the founding of the Kompas daily on 28 June 1965. That newspaper, which carries the slogan "Amanat Hati Nurani Rakyat" (roughly, "the mandate of the people's conscience"), became the anchor of a growing media empire. Over the following decades the group expanded from newspapers into magazines, book publishing, printing, radio, television and digital media, and KG Media was formed as the umbrella for those media interests. KG Media describes itself as having more than 55 years of experience in media and broadcasting, and states that its combined properties reach more than 64 percent of Indonesia's population. Its portfolio includes Harian Kompas and its paid digital news service Kompas.id; the financial daily and weekly Kontan and its digital outlets Kontan.co.id, Business Insight, Kontan Academy and E-Paper Kontan; the Tribun Network of regional newspapers, which publishes in dozens of cities with 25 regional newspaper units across Aceh, Batam, Medan, Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, Lampung, Bangka-Belitung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Kupang, Manado, Makassar, Balikpapan, Banjarmasin, Pontianak and Bali; the television channel KompasTV; the Kompas.com digital news portal; the KG Radio Network; and licensed magazines including National Geographic Indonesia, National Geographic Kids Indonesia, Intisari, Bobo and others. Leadership of KG Media has been closely tied to long-serving Kompas Gramedia executives. Andy Budiman joined the organization on 15 January 2003 as a research and development staff member in the print research department, then advanced through production and business roles before moving to the digital group in November 2015, where he served as vice director and then director. On 1 August 2018 he became CEO of KG Media. Wisnu Nugroho, a journalist who joined Kompas on 16 July 2001 and later served as editor-in-chief of Kompas.com, became Vice President Sustainability & Communication of KG Media in October 2024. Johnsons, a technology executive who joined KG Media in 2017, took charge of the Technology Directorate in July 2023, overseeing product, design, data, engineering and infrastructure, and has driven the adoption of AI and automation across editorial and commercial functions since 2022. In the 2010s and 2020s KG Media has pursued digital transformation and diversification. It has restructured technology and product teams for more agile, cross-functional collaboration, and it has built out a "business solution ecosystem" offering media and marketing services to advertisers. It has also developed sustainability programming under the "Lestari" banner, including campaigns, a summit and awards, and projects such as waste management aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. Several print titles have been discontinued or moved to digital as reader habits shifted, including the magazines Hai (ceased print July 2017), Kawanku (December 2016), Girls Cantik dan Cerdas (December 2015), Bobo Junior (December 2022) and Nova (December 2022).
