Overview
Kewn Records is an independent record label and artist collective based in Malta. Founded in 2017 by Nick Morales with mentorship from James Vella, who runs the UK-based label Phantom Limb, Kewn Records was created to fill a gap in the Maltese music scene by providing professional representation and distribution for local artists. The label is coordinated by Nicholas Bonello, who joined to handle communications and day-to-day administration. The label's stated mission is to work exclusively to release Maltese music internationally. It began with a compilation release, "Being in Space and Time," in early 2018, and has since released music by artists such as BILA, The Areola Treat, Krishna, Niket, A Lily, DALAM, Massacre House Party, and Dolls For Idols. Kewn Records releases music regularly on Bandcamp and Spotify, and occasionally in physical formats such as vinyl and cassette. Some of its releases have been listed by the popular site Uproxx. Kewn Records operates as a private, independent entity. Its catalog spans alternative, rock, electronic, and experimental genres, reflecting the diversity of Malta's alternative music scene. The label continues to promote Maltese artists through digital releases, physical editions, and events such as Crowned Events – Battle of the Bands.
History
Kewn Records was established in 2017 by Nick Morales, a figure in the Maltese music scene, with the assistance of James Vella. Vella, who is based in the United Kingdom and runs the independent label Phantom Limb, acted as a mentor and consultant during the label's formation in mid-to-late 2017. The impetus for Kewn Records was a perceived lack of infrastructure and professional representation for Maltese musicians; as the label's own history states, "There was a lacuna in this field in Malta and this local label was really needed in Malta; we have so much talent, but no proper representation." Vella, who has worked in independent music for over 15 years, felt nostalgic towards his birth country and had long been interested in Malta's alternative music scene. He helped set up the business side of the label, offered best-practice advice, listened to demos, and made introductions to other music industry professionals. His role remained purely that of a mentor and consultant. Nick Morales then brought in Nicholas Bonello, who joined as coordinator, handling communications and day-to-day administration. In early 2018, Kewn Records launched with its first release, a compilation titled "Being in Space and Time." The mixtape featured some of the label's favourite local tracks of 2017 and signaled the label's intention to document and promote the best of Maltese alternative music. Since its founding, Kewn Records has released music by a range of Maltese artists, including BILA, The Areola Treat, Krishna, Niket, A Lily, DALAM, Massacre House Party, and Dolls For Idols. The label releases its music regularly on Bandcamp and Spotify, and occasionally in physical formats such as vinyl and cassette. Some of its releases have been listed by the popular website Uproxx, indicating a degree of international recognition. The label continues to operate as an independent entity, working exclusively to release Maltese music internationally.
