Overview

Keren Or Farm (Hebrew: חוות קרן אור, "Farm of a Ray of Light") is an Israeli mutual-rehabilitation farm and non-profit association founded in 2016 by Keren-Or Solomon. Its full name is "Keren Or Farm – A Mutual Experience at a Rehabilitation Farm." The farm is home to hundreds of rescued animals — farm animals, pets, and wildlife — most of them disabled or otherwise vulnerable, and it operates as a therapeutic center for a wide range of human populations, including people with mental illness, combat veterans with PTSD, at-risk children and youth, victims of sexual assault, lonely elderly and Holocaust survivors, autistic people and people with special needs, and prisoners in cooperation with the Israel Prison Service Rehabilitation Authority. The model is "mutual rehabilitation": patients care for the animals with compassion and help rehabilitate them, and in doing so rehabilitate themselves. The farm was first located in Kfar Yona, then moved to Adanim in the Sharon region on a 4-dunam farmstead, and in October 2021 relocated to Beit Berl. It was registered as an association on 30 July 2017. Daily operations are carried out almost entirely by volunteers — around 65 people, including at-risk youth, elderly, autistic adults, and combat veterans — who feed, clean, provide veterinary care, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation for the animals. The farm includes offices, a rehabilitation center, a clinic, a human treatment room, a disabled-dog compound, and a cabin for blind cats. It rescues hundreds of animals each year and finds adoptive homes for dozens. Funding comes from donations, fairs, public tours, personal treatments, and children's classes; in 2019 the association's income included 294,056 NIS in donations and 123,826 NIS for services. The farm also runs guided tours, educational activities, and adoption programs, and it is active on Facebook and Instagram.

History

Keren Or Farm was founded in 2016 by Keren-Or Solomon, following her earlier initiatives running programs for children with animals and animal-assisted rehabilitation. Concerned about animal suffering in such frameworks, she discontinued them and opened a shelter farm instead. The farm was initially located in Kfar Yona, and after about a year it moved to Adanim in the Sharon region, on a 4-dunam farmstead. On 30 July 2017, the farm was registered as an association (non-profit). Solomon manages the farm and lives on site. Due to the landowners' request to vacate the area in Adanim, during October 2021 the farm moved again, to a site in Beit Berl. The farm's full name is "Keren Or Farm – A Mutual Experience at a Rehabilitation Farm." It was founded out of a vision that the special bond with animals and caring for them also heals the caregivers. The farm houses and treats about 450 animals rescued from abuse or other distress, including birds, dogs, cats, pigs, horses, goats, turtles, donkeys, cows, sheep, and more. About 65 volunteers work there, among them at-risk youth, elderly, autistic adults, and combat veterans, some of whom come through the Ministry of Health rehabilitation basket. Daily operations are carried out by about 65 volunteers responsible for feeding, veterinary care, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, cleaning, bottle-feeding, fitting wheelchairs, accompanying personal treatments, and more. Some workers come through national service. Many of the animals are disabled in one way or another. Every male that arrives is neutered, and in the case of cats and dogs, females are spayed. Besides animal living quarters, the farm includes offices, a rehabilitation center, a clinic, a human treatment room, a disabled-dog compound, and a cabin for blind cats. The public contacts the association's volunteers through various media to report animals in distress. Each year the farm is responsible for the rescue and salvation of hundreds of animals and finding adoptive homes for dozens. Rescues are carried out using special vehicles for transporting animals: a rescue vehicle, a horse trailer, and a trailer for calves and sheep. The association's funding sources are donations, fairs, public tours, personal treatments, and children's classes. In 2019 the association's income included 294,056 NIS in donations and 123,826 NIS for services.
