Overview
The Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) is a non-profit organization based in Kenya that supports the development and scale-up of locally relevant climate technologies and enterprises. Established in 2012 as the first center in a global Climate Innovation Center network initiated by the World Bank's infoDev programme, KCIC became independent in 2015. It was founded on the belief that climate challenges can become opportunities for innovation, enterprise, jobs, and resilient communities. KCIC brings together entrepreneurship support, climate finance, technical assistance, partnerships, and policy engagement. Its work spans incubation, capacity building, and financing options for business ventures and Kenyan entrepreneurs. The organization describes itself as "founder-first," operating programmes such as the Founders Collective, a community for KCIC alumni and climate entrepreneurs across the ecosystem that provides relationships, capability, markets, capital, and peer support as enterprises grow. KCIC's vision is "Sustainable Enterprises and Climate Resilient Communities," and its mission is "Catalysing Climate Entrepreneurship." Its 2025–2030 strategy aims to strengthen climate entrepreneurship and resilience at the ecosystem level, building on more than a decade of enterprise support. The organization identifies key challenges including limited access to finance and technical assistance, inadequate market systems and enabling environments, insufficient community engagement and resilience, and the need for stronger institutional capacity. KCIC is led by CEO Joseph Murabula, with a team including Felix Magaju (Director, Enterprise Support and Investments), Ernest Chitechi (Corporate Services Manager), Ivy Otambo (Human Resource Manager), Julius Gichana (Finance Manager), and Stephene Musyoka (Monitoring and Evaluation Manager). It operates primarily in Kenya and the wider East African and African climate entrepreneurship ecosystem, and engages suppliers and consultants through public procurement notices.
History
The Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) was established in 2012 as the first center in a global Climate Innovation Center network initiated by the World Bank's infoDev programme. It was founded on the belief that climate challenges can become opportunities for innovation, enterprise, jobs, and resilient communities. Since its founding, KCIC has focused on supporting the development and scale-up of locally relevant climate technologies and enterprises. Its work combines entrepreneurship support, climate finance, technical assistance, partnerships, and policy engagement. Over more than a decade, KCIC has built a portfolio of programmes aimed at individual ventures and at strengthening the broader climate entrepreneurship ecosystem. By the mid-2020s, KCIC had articulated a 2025–2030 strategy to strengthen climate entrepreneurship and resilience at the ecosystem level, building on more than a decade of enterprise support. The organization identified persistent challenges including limited access to finance and technical assistance, inadequate market systems and enabling environments, insufficient community engagement and resilience, and the need for stronger institutional capacity.
