The brand developed from Gerlinger Motors, a Portland, Oregon, dealership founded in 1912 by George T. Gerlinger and Louis Gerlinger Jr. The business began manufacturing trucks in 1914, producing the Gersix, a steel-framed six-cylinder truck whose durability made it attractive to Pacific Northwest logging operators. After Gerlinger Motors entered bankruptcy, Edgar K. Worthington and Frederick Kent acquired the business and renamed it Gersix Motor Company. In January 1923, the company was reincorporated as Kenworth Motor Truck Company, a name formed from Kent and Worthington. From its earliest years, Kenworth emphasized individually built vehicles configured to customer requirements rather than a purely standardized automobile-style production model. History
Kenworth’s history begins with Gerlinger Motors, established in Portland in 1912 by brothers George T. Gerlinger and Louis Gerlinger Jr. The company initially operated as a vehicle dealership but soon moved into manufacturing. In 1914 it built the Gersix, a truck named for its six-cylinder engine. Its steel construction and heavy-duty character suited logging and other rugged work in the Pacific Northwest. Gerlinger Motors moved to Tacoma in 1916 and later fell into bankruptcy. Edgar K. Worthington and Captain Frederick Kent acquired the business in 1917 and renamed it Gersix Motor Company. When Kent retired, his son Harry Kent joined the enterprise. Continued demand allowed the company to reorganize and relocate, leading to its reincorporation in January 1923 as Kenworth Motor Truck Company, combining the names Kent and Worthington. Kenworth distinguished itself by building trucks in individual work bays and configuring them to customer specifications. It entered bus manufacturing in 1926 and began Canadian production in 1927. The Great Depression reduced truck demand and increased loan defaults, but Kenworth diversified into fire apparatus and adopted diesel power as standard equipment in 1933. It also introduced an early factory-produced sleeper cab and, in 1936, its first cab-over-engine truck. War production transformed the company. Kenworth supplied the U.S. Army with M-1 4-ton 6x6 recovery vehicles and manufactured aircraft components for Boeing. By the end of the war it had produced 1,930 military wreckers. After the death of president Philip Johnson in 1944, ownership changed hands, and Pacific Car and Foundry Company acquired Kenworth in 1945. Kenworth subsequently became part of the PACCAR organization and later operated as a sister brand to Peterbilt. The postwar period brought geographic and product expansion. Kenworth sold across the western United States and internationally, supplied large truck orders to ARAMCO, entered Mexico, and established Kenworth Australia in 1968. The W900 conventional and K100 cab-over lines, both launched for 1961 production, became central to the company’s identity. New plants in Kansas City and Chillicothe supported growth, while the C500 and other specialized products broadened the range. In the 1980s and 1990s, Kenworth concentrated on fuel economy, aerodynamics, and medium-duty coverage. The T600, introduced in 1985, used a sloped hood and set-back axle to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve maneuverability. The T800, T400, T300, T2000, and Mid-Ranger/K300 expanded the portfolio across highway and vocational applications. The Renton, Washington, plant opened in 1993, and PACCAR’s acquisition of DAF Trucks and Leyland Trucks later provided additional engineering and manufacturing resources for cab-over products. During the 2000s and 2010s, Kenworth refreshed its conventional and cab-over families. The T660, T700, T680, T880, and W990 successively addressed aerodynamic highway work, vocational duty, and premium conventional-truck demand. The W900 continued in production, giving it an unusually long lifespan. Kenworth also developed the export-focused K500 and modern medium-duty K-series models based partly on PACCAR and DAF platforms.
