Overview
Kenmore is an American household-appliance brand whose identity has historically been closely linked with Sears. Unlike a conventional appliance manufacturer, Kenmore has generally operated as a branded product program: Sears developed specifications, marketed the products, and sold them through its retail channels, while different original equipment manufacturers produced particular models. This arrangement allowed Kenmore to offer a broad range of appliances without owning a single vertically integrated manufacturing system. The brand first appeared on a four-drawer, drop-feed sewing machine sold between 1913 and 1919. It subsequently expanded into core household appliances, with the first Kenmore washing machine introduced in 1927 and the first Kenmore vacuum cleaners appearing in 1932. Over time, the name became associated with practical, mass-market home equipment sold through Sears stores, catalogs, service operations, and later online channels. Kenmore's portfolio has included laundry appliances, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, cooking equipment, vacuum cleaners and other floor-care products. It has also covered air conditioners, dehumidifiers, HVAC-related equipment, grills, cookware, and selected home products. In 1976, Sears extended the Kenmore name to refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers that had previously been marketed under the Coldspot name. The brand later introduced higher-positioned product families, including Kenmore Elite and Kenmore Pro. In 2016, the name was briefly extended into consumer electronics through Kenmore-branded high-definition and ultra-high-definition televisions. Manufacturing relationships have varied by product category and period. Known suppliers have included Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Electrolux, Panasonic, Cleva North America, and Winia Electronics, among others. Whirlpool was historically a particularly important supplier, but its long-running relationship with Sears ended in 2017 after the companies disagreed over commercial terms and pricing. Sears model-number source codes have traditionally been used by repair and parts specialists to identify the original manufacturer of particular products. Distribution has also changed substantially. Sears announced in 2017 that Kenmore products would be offered through Amazon and that selected appliances would support Amazon Alexa integration. Following Sears Holdings' Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in October 2018, ownership of the brand became part of the broader restructuring of Sears assets. Transformco, formed in 2019 after acquiring Sears Holdings' assets, became the brand's owner and licensor. Kenmore products have since been offered through Sears as well as third-party and online retailers, including Amazon, Lowe's, Target, and other distribution partners. A 2013 agreement with O'Rourke Sales Company sought to broaden distribution across retail, e-commerce, rent-to-own, hospitality, builders, commercial customers, and military exchanges. In Canada, the end of Sears Canada's operations in 2018 sharply reduced ordinary Kenmore distribution, although certain existing warranties and parts-support arrangements continued. In January 2024, Kenmore announced that a limited selection would be distributed through Costco Canada, with possible expansion to other Canadian retailers. The brand therefore remains active, but its current market presence depends more on licensing, outsourced manufacturing, and multi-channel distribution than on the Sears store network that originally made it prominent.
History
Kenmore's history began in 1913, when the name was applied to a four-drawer, drop-feed sewing machine sold through the Sears retail system. The initial use established a brand that could identify products marketed by Sears even when manufacturing was performed by another company. The name later moved into more central household categories. Kenmore washing machines appeared in 1927, followed by Kenmore vacuum cleaners in 1932. During the twentieth century, Sears used Kenmore as a principal house brand for domestic equipment. Its importance came from the combination of Sears' large retail and catalog presence, national service infrastructure, and the ability to source products from multiple manufacturers. Kenmore products were therefore not necessarily made in Kenmore-owned factories. Different suppliers produced models according to category, specification, and commercial arrangement. The brand broadened considerably in 1976, when Sears applied Kenmore branding to refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers that had previously carried the Coldspot name. This expansion helped establish Kenmore as a general home-appliance identity rather than a label limited to laundry or floor care. The portfolio subsequently included cooking appliances, dishwashers, refrigeration, laundry, vacuum cleaners, air treatment, HVAC equipment, grills, cookware, and related home products. Sears also developed tiered extensions. Kenmore Elite served as a more upscale line, while Kenmore Pro addressed professional-style appliances and equipment. In 2016, the brand entered consumer electronics with high-definition Kenmore televisions and ultra-high-definition Kenmore Elite televisions, although appliances remained the central focus of the business. A defining feature of Kenmore's operating model was its network of original equipment manufacturers. Whirlpool supplied important categories for many years, including some refrigerators, top-loading washers and matching dryers, and dishwashers. Other identified manufacturers have included LG, Samsung, Electrolux, Panasonic, Cleva North America, and Winia Electronics. In 2017, the long-running Whirlpool-Sears relationship ended after the parties disagreed over commercial demands and the effect those demands could have on retail pricing. Kenmore continued to use multiple manufacturing sources rather than relying on one supplier. Distribution began changing before Sears' financial collapse. In December 2013, Kenmore announced a new line of major kitchen appliances. The following month, it announced an exclusive distribution agreement with O'Rourke Sales Company intended to reach consumer and commercial retailers, e-commerce, rent-to-own operators, hospitality businesses, builders, and military exchanges. In 2017, Sears announced Amazon distribution and Alexa-related appliance integration, reflecting a move beyond Sears-owned channels. Sears Holdings' Chapter 11 filing in October 2018 placed the brand's ownership and future in question. Sears continued selling Kenmore products and honoring warranties during the restructuring. Transformco was formed in 2019 after acquiring Sears Holdings' assets and subsequently became the owner and licensor associated with Kenmore. The brand's products have been distributed through Sears, Amazon, Lowe's, Target, and other online or retail channels. Kenmore's Canadian presence was disrupted by the demise of Sears Canada in 2018. Existing warranties for some Whirlpool-made Kenmore products continued to be honored, and parts suppliers remained available for previously sold products. In January 2024, the brand announced limited distribution through Costco Canada. Kenmore remains an active brand whose commercial model combines outsourced manufacturing, licensed ownership, broad product coverage, and increasingly diverse retail distribution.
