Overview
KDStV Sauerlandia Münster (Katholische Deutsche Studentenverbindung Sauerlandia im CV) is a Catholic German student corporation founded on 17 December 1847 at the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy in Münster. It is a non-dueling (nicht-schlagend), colour-wearing (farbentragend) and Catholic association of students and alumni, and it belongs to the Cartellverband der katholischen deutschen Studentenverbindungen (CV), the largest interdisciplinary academic association in Germany with roughly 32,000 members in over 126 corporations at 55 university locations. Sauerlandia is the oldest continuously existing corporation in the CV and, after KDStV Bavaria Bonn, one of the oldest Catholic student corporations overall. The corporation describes itself as a community of Münster students who remain connected during their studies and long afterwards. Its three principles are "Frömmigkeit, Freiheit, Frohsinn" (piety, freedom, cheerfulness), and its motto since 1850 has been "Fromm, frei, froh" (pious, free, cheerful). Members are drawn from the various faculties of Münster's universities, and the association aims to encourage academic work, to establish and cultivate sincere lifelong friendship among members, and to support their personal growth. Active students take on responsibility early — as speakers before several hundred Bundesbrüder and guests, as event organisers, or as recruiters and mentors of new members — and older members (Alte Herren) support younger ones with advice and professional experience. Sauerlandia's colours are blue, white and green, representing the colours of the sky (blue and white) and the landscape (green) of the Sauerland region. The Fuxen colours are blue, white, blue. Since 1897, the 50th year of its existence, both the Burschenband and the Fuxenband have carried a golden percussion; previously the percussion was silver. The Senior wears an ornate ribbon of the sister corporation KDStV Novesia Bonn over the left shoulder as a sign of special attachment. The coat of arms includes an anchor and quiver (friendship and attachment), the Westphalian horse (origin of members), an oak wreath (Germanness), a lyre (muses, arts and song), crossed Schläger (academic freedom) and the founding date. Sauerlandia is one of seven Münster CV corporations and a member of the Münsterscher Cartellverband (MCV). It holds number 54 in the internal order of Cartell corporations, and its official abbreviation is Sd. The corporation maintains a website at sauerlandia.de and continues to recruit students in Münster.
History
Sauerlandia was founded on 17 December 1847 at the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy in Münster. Although the enactment of statutes was forbidden by the state authorities in the Kingdom of Prussia at the time, such statutes were agreed in the course of the founding. Official approval followed in 1849. Sauerlandia is thus the oldest continuously existing student corporation in the CV and, after KDStV Bavaria Bonn — which had to suspend in 1857 for lack of members, dissolved in the winter semester 1866/1867 and was re-founded on 23 May 1873 — probably the second-oldest Catholic student corporation overall. Even before the Cartellverband had such a principle, Sauerlandia adopted the Catholicity principle of the Cartellverband in 1883. On 7 April 1891, together with KDStV Novesia Bonn, which was still a theologians' association at the time, it founded the "Kartellvereinigung katholischer deutscher Studentenkorporationen", which from 1905 bore the name Katholischer Deutscher Verband farbentragender Studentenkorporationen (KDV). In 1911 the decision was made to join the Cartellverband. During the First World War, 27 members of Sauerlandia fell. In 1920 almost the entire Aktivitas joined the Akademische Wehr Münster in order to put down the uprising in the Ruhr. During the Nazi era, the corporation's operations were suspended and its dissolution was decided. After the war, KDStV Sauerlandia was re-founded in Münster on 5 June 1946. Sauerlandia is one of seven Münster CV corporations and a member of the Münsterscher Cartellverband (MCV). Since 1850 its motto has been "Fromm, frei, froh" (pious, free, cheerful). Sauerlandia Münster holds number 54 in the internal order of Cartell corporations, and its official abbreviation is Sd. The colours of KDStV Sauerlandia are blue, white and green, representing the colours of the sky (blue and white) and the landscape (green) of the Sauerland. The Fuxen colours are blue, white, blue. Since 1897, the 50th year of its existence, both the Burschenband and the Fuxenband have had a golden percussion; previously the percussion was silver.
