Overview
The Kazinczy Ferenc Társaság (Kazinczy Ferenc Society) is a Hungarian cultural, literary and local-history public-benefit social organization. Its registered seat is in Sátoraljaújhely, at the Kazinczy Ferenc Museum, and its area of operation covers in particular the historical counties of Zemplén and Abaúj. Its main goals include preserving the memory of Ferenc Kazinczy, tending his memorial sites, and exploring and popularizing his life's work; it also researches, presents and nurtures local-history monuments and folk traditions in the former Abaúj and Zemplén areas. The society was decided upon in October 1984, on the 225th anniversary of Ferenc Kazinczy's birth, and was formally established on 26 April 1985 in Sátoraljaújhely with ten members. By early 2009 the number of registered members was around 270. A significant part of its activity consists of literary and scholarly publications. Its yearbook, Széphalom, containing writings on Kazinczy's work as well as literary-history, cultural-history, local-history and ethnographic studies, first appeared in 1986, and was edited for more than twenty years by Kováts Dániel. By 2006 the society had curated or published some 70 books, the most significant of which was the Sátoraljaújhely lexicon published in 2001. It reports to its membership and interested readers twice a year in a newsletter, presenting its programs, publications, lectures and biographies. Its events include commemorative meetings, exhibitions and lectures; its national and regional conferences aim to nurture the mother tongue and to protect and present folk values. Its open universities (szabadegyetemek) organized in the county and on the other side of the border are of outstanding significance. The society played a very significant role in the creation and the opening in April 2008 of the Hungarian Language Museum (Magyar Nyelv Múzeuma) in Széphalom. At its founding, the president of the society was Kováts Dániel, linguist and literary historian, professor at the Comenius Teacher Training College in Sárospatak; the vice-presidents were Bencsik János and Gulyás Mihály, and the secretary was Hőgye István. In early 2009 the president was Fehér József, literary historian and director of the Kazinczy Ferenc Museum; the vice-presidents were Bencsik János, retired museum director of Tokaj, and Bojtor István, retired pastor of Göncruszka; the secretary was Kiss Endre József, director of the Great Library of the Sárospatak Reformed College. In 2023 the society suffered a double loss with the deaths of Kováts Dániel (1929–2023) and Fehér József (1952–2023), honorary presidents and pillar members of the society. The society's annual general meeting in 2024 was held on 12 May 2024 at the Hungarian Language Museum, after which a bench placed in memory of Kováts Dániel and Fehér József was inaugurated in the Kazinczy Garden. The 32nd volume of the Széphalom yearbook is available on the society's website.
