Overview
Kawan Food Berhad is a Malaysian frozen food manufacturer that describes itself as Malaysia's leading frozen food manufacturer. It supplies frozen food worldwide in branded retail and wholesale packaging, and its brands include Kawan and KG. The company traces its origins to a family-run business making traditional pastries, and it later adopted freezing to preserve freshness for export. It is a public company from Malaysia.
History
Kawan Food Berhad has more than 60 years of production experience. It began as a modest family-run business that made and sold home-made traditional pastries to local groceries and supermarkets. The founders took pride in baking and packing food with care, and the food was sold fresh on the same day it was made, limiting the business to nearby locations. By the mid-1980s, as the business gained a steady lead in the local market, there was a need to expand beyond Malaysia. To keep exports fresh without preservatives or artificial ingredients, the founders decided to freeze the products, a decision that changed the course of the business and resulted in the brand known today as Kawan Food. In the 1960s, a family started making traditional food products such as pau, spring roll pastry and kuih manually. Predicting that this may become a dying trade, the son, Mr T.C. Gan, began to automate the process and went further to preserve freshness through freezing.
