Kattappana Municipality

Kattappana Municipality is a local government body in the Idukki district of Kerala, India, located in the Udumbanchola taluk. It is the second municipality in Idukki district and the first high-range municipality in the state. The area serves as a major trading centre for the district while retaining rural characteristics. The economy is based on cash crops such as cardamom, pepper, and coffee, and is therefore subject to price fluctuations. The municipality was formed in 1964 as Kattappana Panchayat, before which it was part of Upputhara Grama Panchayat. On 14 January 2015, an order upgraded Kattappana to a municipality, and the first municipal election was held in November 2015. The region lies at an elevation of 700 to 1200 metres above sea level, with a temperate climate and higher-than-average rainfall. Agriculture is the mainstay, with spice crops like cardamom, coffee, pepper, cocoa, clove, and nutmeg, along with small amounts of paddy, tapioca, and vegetables. The municipality has numerous educational institutions, including schools and colleges.

Kattappana was originally part of the Upputhara Grama Panchayat. In 1964, Kattappana Panchayat was formed. On 14 January 2015, an order was issued upgrading Kattappana to a municipality, making it the second municipality in Idukki district and the first high-range municipality in Kerala. The first municipal election was held in November 2015. The name Kattappana is believed to derive from 'Kattappunna', referring to a giant Punnai tree that stood near present-day Idukkikavala, which served as a landmark. It is said that immigrant farmers mistook the landmark 'Kattappunna' for 'Kattappana'. The area was once dense forest with elephant paths that later became roads.
