Overview
Kas is a Spanish soft-drink brand associated primarily with fruit-flavored carbonated beverages, especially grapefruit, orange, lemon, apple and bitter herbal varieties. The brand is part of the flavored or “flavor” segment of the soft-drinks market, where beverages are distinguished from traditional cola and are often consumed either on their own or as mixers with spirits. Kas has historically been especially connected with Spain and the Basque Country, while also reaching selected international markets including Mexico, the Dominican Republic and France. The brand’s deeper industrial background is connected to the Knörr family’s brewing and beverage activities in Vitoria. In 1870, Román Knörr Streiff, a German-born beer maker who had worked at the Bauhöfer Brewery in Renchen-Ulm, moved to Vitoria and established the La Esperanza beer factory with members of his wife’s family. During the 1920s, his son Román Knörr Ortíz entered the soft-drinks business with a company and trademark known as El As. This earlier name provided the basis for the later Kas identity. Kas as a flavored soda was created in 1956 in Vitoria-Gasteiz by Luis Knörr Elorza. The initial product combined soda with orange juice and was presented as Spain’s first flavored soft drink. The name Kas reportedly joined the family’s “K” with the earlier “As” trademark; the naming suggestion came from Luis Knörr Elorza’s brother, Javier Knörr Elorza. This origin gave the brand both a local industrial identity and a distinctive alternative to the increasingly international cola brands entering the Spanish market. During the 1960s, the business expanded through additional Spanish production plants and broadened its range. Products included Kascol, a cola-style drink, and BitterKas, a bitter beverage based on herbal flavors. BitterKas became one of the brand’s notable commercial successes. Kas also developed visibility through sports sponsorship, including support for a professional cycling team and sponsorship connected with the Spanish national football team during the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Pepsi acquired the company in 1992. Under Pepsi ownership, Kas was developed further in Spain through diet soft drinks and juice-based products. PepsiCo’s international brand architecture generally used Kas in markets where the brand had local recognition, while Mirinda served as the group’s more widely deployed international fruit-soft-drink brand. Kas therefore remained a geographically focused brand rather than becoming a universal PepsiCo name. Marketing became particularly prominent in the 1990s. The Spanish “24 Horas Kas” campaign used the song “Dame Más” and the recurring “Chica Kas” character, creating a provocative, highly recognizable advertising style built around nightlife, flirtation and social taboo. The concept was adapted for Mexico when Pepsi-Cola introduced Kas grapefruit there in response to competition from Coca-Cola’s grapefruit-flavored Fresca. The Mexican launch combined television, radio, outdoor advertising and sampling in bars and clubs, where Kas was promoted as a mixer with tequila. In 2006, the Mexican product was renamed Kas Mas. Kas has also had a varied international footprint. In France it became particularly associated with southwestern regions and with mixes involving gin or vodka. In the Dominican Republic, the brand was introduced through Supermercados Iberia. It was briefly launched in Brazil in the 1990s with guarana-based variants, including combinations involving acerola, passion fruit and peach, but production ended soon afterward. The brand’s known portfolio has included grapefruit, orange, lemon, apple, bitter and juice-based Kasfruit products. Its principal identity remains that of a Spanish-origin, fruit-oriented soft-drink brand within PepsiCo’s beverage portfolio.
History
Kas emerged from a multigenerational beverage enterprise established by the Knörr family in Vitoria, in Spain’s Basque Country. The family’s commercial roots in the area date to 1870, when Román Knörr Streiff, a German-origin brewer formerly associated with the Bauhöfer Brewery in Renchen-Ulm, founded the La Esperanza beer factory with relatives of his wife, Pilar Ortíz de Urbina. The family later moved into non-alcoholic beverages. In the 1920s, Román Knörr Ortíz created a soft-drinks business using the name El As. The modern Kas brand was created in 1956 by Luis Knörr Elorza in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Its first product combined soda with orange juice and was promoted as Spain’s first flavored soft drink. The name Kas was formed by adding the family’s initial “K” to the earlier “As” name, an idea attributed to Luis’s brother Javier Knörr Elorza. This naming and product decision established the brand’s long-term identity around fruit flavor rather than cola. Kas expanded during the 1960s, opening additional plants in Spain and adding products such as Kascol and BitterKas. The latter became a notable success and helped broaden the brand beyond ordinary citrus soda. Sports sponsorship also became part of the company’s public profile. The business sponsored a cycling team and was connected with sponsorship of the Spanish national football team during the 1982 FIFA World Cup. In 1992, Pepsi acquired the company. Following the acquisition, Kas continued to be marketed primarily in Spain while the wider Pepsi organization used Mirinda as its more globally distributed fruit-soft-drink brand. Pepsi ownership supported extensions into diet drinks and juices, including Kasfruit products. The 1990s brought particularly visible advertising activity. Spain’s “24 Horas Kas” campaign used a jingle based on “Dame Más” and featured the stylized “Chica Kas” character. Its presentation relied on humor, sexual suggestion and deliberately provocative situations. The concept was later adapted for Mexico, where Pepsi-Cola launched Kas grapefruit in the context of competition with Fresca. Mexican promotion included broadcast advertising, billboards, radio, music tie-ins and product sampling in nightlife venues, where the drink was presented as a tequila mixer. The Mexican brand was renamed Kas Mas in 2006. Kas also reached markets outside Spain with varying degrees of permanence. It became established in parts of southwestern France, where consumers commonly mixed it with gin or vodka. It was introduced in the Dominican Republic through Supermercados Iberia. During the 1990s it was tested in Brazil with guarana-based flavors, including guarana alone and combinations with acerola, passion fruit and peach; the Brazilian operation ended relatively soon after launch. The brand has also been available in Mexico and has had historical availability in Portugal and Argentina. Its enduring portfolio is centered on citrus and grapefruit soft drinks, bitter herbal beverages and juice products.
