Overview

Karmøy kino (Karmøy kommunale kino) is the only cinema in Karmøy municipality in Rogaland, Norway. It is located in the town center of Kopervik and is owned and operated by the municipality. The current cinema opened on 6 January 1968, replacing the old Kopervik kommunale kino, which had operated in the main street since 1928. At the time of its opening, the new cinema was considered the most modern cinema between Stavanger and Bergen, and it remained the largest and best cinema in the district until Edda Kino in Haugesund was built. The cinema has three auditoriums. Screen 1 is the largest, with 392 seats, while the two other screens are small, intimate halls with 31 and 32 seats respectively. Over the years the cinema has undergone several minor modernizations. In autumn 2010 it was decided that the entire cinema would be digitized and that Screen 1 would be equipped to show 3D films. Today Karmøy kino shows most new cinema releases and offers a range of programs and services, including gift cards, age limits information, mobile ticketing, and special screenings such as Kinodrøsen (senior cinema), Sommerkino (summer cinema), Babykino (baby cinema), and Gratis Ungdomskino (free youth cinema). The cinema's website lists current and upcoming films such as The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Spiralis, Kjærast, Glemselens øy, Spa Weekend, Resident Evil, Heart of the Beast, and Practical Magic: Family Legacy.

History

The first cinema screenings in Kopervik took place at Folkets Hus until the town's first permanent cinema, Kopervik Kommunal Kino, was built in the main street in 1928. After 40 years of operation, it became clear that the new larger municipality of Karmøy should build a new cinema building in Kopervik town center. Karmøy Kommunale Kino opened in January 1968 and was, until Edda Kino in Haugesund was built, the largest and best cinema in the district. The old cinema building in the main street was then demolished to make way for a larger commercial building. The new cinema was a modern facility, in its time the most modern cinema between Stavanger and Bergen. Over the years it has undergone several minor modernizations and remains a modern cinema showing most new film releases. It consists of three auditoriums: Screen 1 with 392 seats, and two small intimate screens with 31 and 32 seats. In autumn 2010 it was decided that the entire cinema would be digitized and that Screen 1 would be equipped to show 3D films. Today the cinema operates under the name Karmøy kino and offers a range of services and special screenings, including Kinodrøsen (senior cinema), Sommerkino (summer cinema), Babykino (baby cinema), and Gratis Ungdomskino (free youth cinema). It also provides gift cards, age limit information, and mobile ticketing.
