Overview
The Karlsverein-Dombauverein, commonly known simply as the Karlsverein, is a non-profit association based in Aachen, Germany, dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Aachen Cathedral (the Marienkirche of Charlemagne). It grew out of one of Aachen's earliest citizens' initiatives and was founded in 1847 as the "Karlsverein zur Restauration des Aachener Münsters." Its mission is to make the cathedral — in its spiritual, religious and historical dimensions — a concern of many people and institutions, and to secure this heritage for posterity. The association works closely with the Dombauhütte Aachen, the cathedral's stonemasonry workshop, and supports restoration and conservation work on the cathedral's fabric, including its Gothic chapels such as the Annakapelle. Aachen Cathedral was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, the first building in Germany to receive that status. The Karlsverein raises funds through memberships, donations and its own foundation, and it publishes an annual Schriftenreihe (essay series). It also administers the Dr. Hans Müllejans-Stiftung, whose purpose is to financially support conservation and maintenance measures in the spirit of monument preservation. As of 2016 the association had just over 2,750 members. Its protector is the respective Bishop of Aachen, and the Bishop, the cathedral provost and the mayor of Aachen sit on its board ex officio. The current chairman is Hubert Herpers, chairman of the board of Sparkasse Aachen. The Karlsverein remains active in the 2020s, organizing public events such as open-air stonemasonry workshops and supporting ongoing restoration projects at the cathedral.
History
The Karlsverein-Dombauverein emerged from one of the first citizens' initiatives in Aachen. In 1847, Aachen citizens founded the "Karlsverein zur Restauration des Aachener Münsters" as a legal person by royal Prussian cabinet order. Its purpose, as recorded in its 1849 statute, was to work for the protection and restoration of the Münster in the city through monetary contributions and in any other appropriate manner. From its earliest years the association focused on the cathedral's Gothic components. In the 1860s it supported extensive restoration work on the Annakapelle, one of the Gothic chapels on the south side of Aachen Cathedral, aiming to recover as much of the chapel's medieval appearance as possible. Work also began on the choir hall, including renewal of glazing and replacement of missing architectural ornament. Over time the association changed its name several times: from Karlsverein zur Restauration des Aachener Münsters to Karlsverein zur Wiederherstellung des Aachener Münsters, then to Karlsverein zur Wiederherstellung des Aachener Domes after the establishment of the Diocese of Aachen in 1930, and finally to today's Karlsverein-Dombauverein. Since 17 April 1899 it has been a legal person by royal Prussian cabinet order. Aachen Cathedral was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, the first building in Germany to be so honored. The Karlsverein has continued to support the cathedral's preservation, working closely with the Dombauhütte Aachen. It publishes an annual Schriftenreihe, which by 2015 comprised seventeen volumes, and it has taken over the sponsorship and administration of the Dr. Hans Müllejans-Stiftung, whose endowment grew from an initial 200,000 euros to around 700,000 euros through additional contributions. In 2021, at the association's initiative, an old Baroque-style portal door was re-erected in the Domgarten on the east side of Aachen Cathedral near Münsterplatz. The portal had been part of the Annakapelle from 1449 to 1772; after the chapel was joined with the Matthiaskapelle it was restored in Baroque style and displayed in the Domgarten until 1865, then stored on the building yard until an Aachen stonemason rediscovered it in 2001 and restored it faithfully. Plaques on its copper double doors bear the names of donors who gave at least 25,000 euros, and the rounded lintel is engraved with the words "donatoribus gratias" (thanks to the donors). As of 2016 the association had just over 2,750 members. Its protector is the respective Bishop of Aachen, who along with the cathedral provost and the mayor of Aachen serves on the board ex officio. The chairman is Hubert Herpers, chairman of the board of Sparkasse Aachen. The Karlsverein remains active in the 2020s, organizing public events such as open-air stonemasonry workshops and supporting ongoing restoration projects at the cathedral.
