Overview

Karim Rashid is an Egyptian-born, Canadian-raised American industrial designer whose practice spans consumer products, furniture, lighting, interiors, architecture, packaging, surface design, hospitality, and brand identity. Born in Cairo in 1960 to an English mother and an Egyptian father who was an abstract artist, Rashid moved with his family to Mississauga, Ontario, when he was five. He studied industrial design at Carleton University in Ottawa, graduating in 1982, and continued his design education in Naples and Milan, where he studied under or worked in the orbit of influential Italian design figures including Ettore Sottsass and Rodolfo Bonetto. Rashid began his professional career in Canada in 1984 with KAN Industrial Designers. Over approximately seven years there, he worked on practical industrial products such as X-ray equipment, mailboxes, and snow shovels. During the same broad period he was involved with the Babel Fashion Collection and North. In 1993 he opened his own design studio in New York City, establishing the base from which he developed an unusually broad international practice. His work is characterized by rounded, fluid forms, vivid color, digital and geometric patterning, and an emphasis on the psychological effect of objects and environments. Rashid has described his approach as “sensual minimalism.” Pink is a recurring color in his visual identity and clothing, while other intense colors, including lime green, are used to create emotional or behavioral associations in domestic settings. His work challenges the idea that well-designed objects must be expensive or reserved for elite consumers, and he has repeatedly pursued partnerships that bring distinctive forms to mass-market or accessible products. Among his best-known designs are the Garbo waste can and Oh Chair for Umbra, bottles and tableware for Alessi, lighting for Artemide and Martinelli Luce, perfume packaging for Kenzo, products for Method and Veuve Clicquot, and a bobble water bottle. His client list has also included Audi, Samsung, Swarovski, Giorgio Armani, Issey Miyake, Estée Lauder, Bombay Sapphire, Finé Water Japan, Davidoff, and other international companies. His work has extended beyond individual objects into retail, hospitality, real estate, and public infrastructure, including a Giorgio Armani concept store, hotels, resort projects, and New York sewer manhole covers designed in 1999. Rashid designed the Semiramis hotel in Athens in 2004, later became the exclusive designer for the economy-design hotel brand prizeotel, and was selected for real-estate developments in New York by HAP Investments in 2014. In 2016 he was announced as the designer of a major renovation of Temptation Resort and Spa in Cancún. His work has been exhibited or collected by institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has also published books on design, creativity, lifestyle, and his own work, and has received honorary degrees and professional honors, including the Lawrence Israel Prize from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2017. Rashid remains active internationally through his New York-based studio and collaborations with manufacturers, hospitality operators, developers, and consumer brands.

History

Karim Rashid was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1960 and moved to Canada with his family at the age of five. His father was an abstract artist, and Rashid grew up in an environment in which visual experimentation and creative work were familiar. He attended Woodlands Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, and later studied industrial design at Carleton University in Ottawa, earning a bachelor's degree in 1982. He pursued further design studies in Naples, Italy, and spent a year in Milan working at the Rodolfo Bonetto Studio. These Canadian and Italian experiences placed him between practical industrial design and the more experimental traditions of postwar European design. In 1984 Rashid joined KAN Industrial Designers in Canada. His work there included technically oriented products such as X-ray equipment as well as everyday objects including a mailbox and a snow shovel. He also co-founded and designed the Babel Fashion Collection and North between 1985 and 1991. These early activities demonstrated the breadth that would later define his career: Rashid moved freely between industrial objects, fashion, visual identity, and consumer culture rather than limiting himself to one product category. Rashid established his own New York design studio in 1993. From that base, he developed relationships with manufacturers and brands across furniture, housewares, lighting, packaging, luxury goods, fashion, electronics, hospitality, and architecture. His commercial visibility increased through designs such as the Garbo waste can and Oh Chair for Umbra. These products helped associate his name with rounded forms, expressive color, and the use of industrial materials in objects intended for everyday life. His practice also included watches and tableware for Alessi, lighting for Artemide and Martinelli Luce, perfume bottles for Kenzo, and products for Veuve Clicquot, Method, Audi, Samsung, Swarovski, Armani, Issey Miyake, Estée Lauder, and other companies. A central theme of Rashid's work is the emotional and psychological power of designed environments and objects. He has explained his use of color in experiential terms, treating pink as a color associated with well-being or positive energy and using lime green in some kitchen contexts because of its relationship to dining and appetite. His description of his style as “sensual minimalism” captures the combination of simplified silhouettes and deliberately stimulating color, pattern, and tactility. His public image, including frequent white or pink clothing, reinforces the connection between his personal identity and his design language. The practice expanded into interiors, retail, hospitality, and urban design. In 1999 Rashid designed New York sewer manhole covers, applying his visual approach to an overlooked element of civic infrastructure. In 2004 he designed the Semiramis hotel in Athens, his first hotel project. In 2008 he became the exclusive designer for prizeotel, an economy-design hotel brand founded by Marco Nussbaum. He later worked on real-estate developments for HAP Investments in New York and was announced in 2016 as the designer of a major renovation of Temptation Resort and Spa in Cancún. Rashid's work has been exhibited or collected by major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has participated in public design discussions and visual-interview formats, including a drawing-based Design Dialogues project. His publications include I Want to Change the World, Karim Rashid: Evolution, Digipop, Design Your Self, Karim Rashid Space, Sketch: Karim, and Karim Rashid: From the Beginning. He has received honorary doctorates from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, OCAD University, Pratt Institute, and Carleton University. In 2012, his Ottawa Collection with BoConcept received a Red Dot Design Award, and in 2017 he received the Lawrence Israel Prize from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Rashid continues to operate as an independent international designer through his New York studio.
