Overview

Kapplerbräu is a historic private brewery, inn (Gasthof) and hotel located above the market square in the market town of Altomünster in Upper Bavaria, Germany. The business is a family enterprise owned by the Wiedemann family, now in its third and fourth generation, and is one of the oldest continuously operating breweries in the region. Its baroque building, with a curved gable and a wrought-iron inn sign dated 1849, is a protected cultural heritage monument. The brewery produces a range of traditional Bavarian beers, including Export-Hell, Echt Altomünsterer Hefeweisse, Leichte Weisse, Dunkles Zunftbier and Pater Simon Premium Pils, as well as non-alcoholic beverages such as lemonades, cola-mix and diet fruit juices. Annual beer output is approximately 7,000 hectoliters. In addition to brewing, Kapplerbräu operates a restaurant serving Bavarian-Swabian cuisine, a beer garden in a romantic inner courtyard, hotel rooms, event and conference facilities, and the Altomünster Brewery Museum, founded in 1985. The brewery traces its origins to 1561, when brewer Johann Schmidt first brewed beer on the site. Over the centuries the property changed hands several times; in 1671 Johann Kappler became owner and rebuilt the baroque inn and brewery in 1707, giving the business its name. In 1922 the brewer Wilhelm Wiedemann from Thannhausen acquired the estate by marriage into the brewer's family, and his descendants continue to run it today. The inn and hotel were reopened in 2009, and in 2011 the brewery celebrated 450 years of brewing tradition.

History

The history of Kapplerbräu begins in 1561, when the brewer Johann Schmidt first brewed beer on the site in Altomünster. In 1641 the brewer Anton Hörmann from Gebenhausen acquired the property. Thirty years later, in 1671, Johann Kappler took over the brewery; he rebuilt the baroque inn and brewery in 1707 and remains the namesake of the establishment. Between 1718 and 1922 the property changed hands several times. In 1922 the brewer Wilhelm Wiedemann from Thannhausen acquired the estate by marriage to the brewer's daughter, and his family has owned the house ever since. Under his management important modernizations were carried out, and in 1937 a new brewhouse (Sudhaus) was built at Vogelgarten. His son Hans Wiedemann, motivated by the ongoing modernization and inevitable changes, sought to preserve as many memories and relics of the historic brewery as possible; in 1985 he founded the brewery museum (Brauereimuseum Altomünster) in the former brewery and malthouse building. The Gasthof and Hotel were reopened in 2009, and two years later, in 2011, the brewery celebrated 450 years of brewing craftsmanship. Today Kapplerbräu is owned by the Wiedemann family in the third and fourth generation and is run by the sons Hans, Anton and Max, who continue the business with a love of tradition and fresh new ideas. The brewery produces around 7,000 hectoliters of beer per year, including Export-Hell, Echt Altomünsterer Hefeweisse, Leichte Weisse, Dunkles Zunftbier and Pater Simon Premium Pils, as well as non-alcoholic beverages. The baroque building complex, with its curved gables, wrought-iron inn sign from 1849, 18th-century barn and Art Nouveau hall building from around 1910, is a protected monument.
