Overview
The Kapfenberger Sportvereinigung (KSV) is a sports association based in Kapfenberg, Styria, Austria. It was founded in 1947 to rebuild organized sport in the town after the Second World War, and today it is the largest amateur sports association in Austria, with around 5,200 members and 43 clubs. The KSV functions as an umbrella organization: its sections were converted into legally independent branch clubs in 1996, and since October 1996 the KSV has acted as the main association for these self-governing clubs. Its best-known branch clubs include the Kapfenberg Bulls in basketball, which have played continuously in Austria's top basketball league since 1991 and have won multiple national championships, and the Kapfenberger SV in football, which has competed in the Austrian Bundesliga and currently plays in the second tier. Beyond football and basketball, the KSV covers a wide range of sports, from skiing, swimming and athletics to fencing, chess, judo, volleyball and model flying. The association also runs youth development programs, including a sports-focused school class, a polysportive project in primary schools, and a team sports academy. In 2002 the Styrian provincial government named the KSV Club of the Year, and in 2005 it was recognized as Austria's best sports club. The KSV remains a central civic institution in Kapfenberg, linking competitive sport, youth education and community life.
History
The Kapfenberger Sportvereinigung (KSV) was established in the aftermath of the Second World War, when most sports clubs in Austria had been banned. From 1945, the town of Kapfenberg and the Böhler company pushed to rebuild sporting structures. A first general assembly took place on 19 August 1945, and the organization was initially called Amateur-Sportclub Kapfenberg. The first sections were formed for football, table tennis, handball and winter sports, with fencing and chess added in 1947. At that time the club had around 400 members. The official founding date is given as 21 March 1947, when the club also officially renamed itself Kapfenberger Sportvereinigung. The legally valid founding date under association law is 29 June 1948. In the following decades, more and more sections joined the KSV. By 1975 it had 19 sections and seven affiliated clubs with about 3,350 members. In 1996 the sections were converted into legally independent branch clubs, because until then the entire financial risk of all sections had rested with the KSV board. Since October 1996 the KSV has acted as the main association for these self-governing branch clubs. In 2002 the Styrian provincial government named the KSV Club of the Year for its exceptional achievements in sports organization, and in 2005 it was recognized as Austria's best sports club. By 2008 the KSV consisted of 24 branch clubs and 14 affiliated clubs with around 5,500 members. In 2023 it counted 43 clubs with 5,200 members. In November 2023, after 27 years, Peter Putzgruber handed over the office of chairman to Franz Trieb. The KSV's football branch, Kapfenberger SV, was part of the association from the beginning and became an independent branch club in 1997; it enjoyed its greatest successes in the 1950s and 1960s in the A-Liga, returned to the top division from 2008 to 2012, and has since played in the second league. The basketball branch, Kapfenberg Bulls, has played continuously in the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga since 1991, won four consecutive championship titles from 2001 to 2004, three cup titles, and a fifth championship in 2017; it became a branch club of the KSV in 1996 after a merger with the KSV basketball section founded in 1965. In summer 2009 the insolvent Icetigers became a division of the association. The KSV also developed a youth model: founded in 1997, it led to a sports-focused class at BG/BRG Kapfenberg in 1999, a polysportive project in 2001 supporting physical education in eight primary schools, and a team sports academy in 2003 focusing on football, basketball and ice hockey, with a boarding school and training sessions. A cooperation with FH Joanneum operates under the name 'School, Education and Sport in One Place'.
