Overview

Kansai Catalyst Co., Ltd. (関西触媒化学株式会社) is a Japanese specialty chemical manufacturer headquartered in Sakai, Osaka. Its business centers on the development, manufacture and sale of industrial chemical products, including cathode materials for secondary batteries, electronic component materials, metal surface treatment agents, and various chemicals for catalysts. The company traces its origins to 1947, when Minoura Pharmaceutical Works was founded; in March 1957 it was reorganized as Kansai Catalyst Co., Ltd. and established in Minamishimizu-cho, Sakai. It has since grown into a supplier of high-purity metal compounds used as key materials across a wide range of industries. The product portfolio is organized around metal compounds: nickel compounds (composite nickel hydroxide, nickel hydroxide, nickel acetate, nickel nitrate in crystal and solution form, nickel sulfate, nickel chloride), cobalt compounds (cobalt nitrate, cobalt acetate, cobalt sulfate, cobalt chloride), yttrium compounds (yttrium nitrate 73%), cadmium compounds (cadmium nitrate), magnesium compounds (magnesium acetate), zinc compounds (zinc nitrate, zinc acetate), copper compounds (copper nitrate, basic copper carbonate, cupric chloride, cuprous oxide, cupric oxide), aluminum compounds (aluminum nitrate), other compounds (ferric ammonium oxalate, ammonium oxalate, potassium oxalate, sodium oxalate, Devarda's alloy), and phosphorescent pigments. These are supplied to fields such as batteries, electronic components, catalysts, surface treatment, pigments and reagents. The company's core technologies include spheroidization, dissimilar-element solid-solution technology, coating technology and fine-particle manufacturing. Its battery-material synthesis technology and high-purity production capabilities have become increasingly important with the rise of electric and hybrid vehicles, and the company has invested in production equipment and technical development in anticipation of this demand. It operates manufacturing plants in Yamaguchi (Tabuse) and Gifu (Tajimi), a Tokyo sales office, and a central research laboratory, and holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications. As of the company profile, it employs 97 people with capital of ¥302.8 million, and remains privately held. In 2011 it established Central Battery Materials Co., Ltd., and in 2017 it marked its 60th anniversary.

History

Kansai Catalyst Co., Ltd. traces its origins to August 1947, when Minoura Pharmaceutical Works was founded. In March 1957, the business was reorganized as Kansai Catalyst Co., Ltd. and established in Minamishimizu-cho, Sakai. In May 1960, the head office and Sakai Plant were expanded and relocated to Kashiwagi-cho, Sakai. In November 1964, the company succeeded in Japan's first export of catalysts and catalyst technology under the Japan-Soviet export protocol. In April 1965, a second plant was added in Hamadera-Ishizu-cho, Sakai, and in August 1965 the Tabuse Plant (now the Yamaguchi Plant) was newly established in Tabuse-cho, Kumage-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. A Tokyo sales office was opened in Matsubara, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo in November 1972, and in June 1974 a nickel-cadmium battery treatment plant was installed for pollution prevention and resource recovery. The Tokyo sales office moved to Nihonbashi-Honcho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo in April 1979. In April 1983, a new head office building was constructed in Kashiwagi-cho, Sakai, and the Gifu Plant was newly established in Kasahara-cho, Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture. A Central Research Laboratory was established in October 1986. In August 1994, new wastewater treatment facilities were installed at the Yamaguchi Plant. In December 1995, a third-party allotment capital increase of 25,000 shares was carried out. In December 1996, the company developed and began production of high-capacity nickel hydroxide (cobalt-coated). In August 2000, high-capacity nickel hydroxide production equipment was expanded. ISO 9001 certification was obtained in August 2003 and ISO 14001 in November 2004. In November 2007, nickel acetate production equipment was expanded, and in August 2009, composite nickel hydroxide production equipment was expanded. In April 2011, the Tokyo sales office moved to Kanda-Kon'ya-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo (Kanda System Building). In November 2011, Central Battery Materials Co., Ltd. was established. In March 2017, the company celebrated its 60th anniversary. The company continues to focus on high-purity, high-quality products and proprietary technologies, with battery materials for electric and hybrid vehicles becoming an increasingly important part of its business.
