Overview

Kanadevia Inova Schmack GmbH is a German biogas technology company based in Schwandorf, Bavaria. It is a leading German supplier in the biogas industry, drawing on more than 30 years of experience in plant construction and in the maintenance, operation and optimisation of biogas plants. The company was founded in 1995 as Schmack Biogas on the initiative of Ulrich Schmack, the son of sheep farmers, and grew into one of the pioneers of the German biogas sector. Its shares were at one time part of the ÖkoDAX sustainability index. After running into liquidity problems, Schmack Biogas was acquired in 2009 by the Viessmann Group, a German heating and renewable-energy technology group. Under Viessmann ownership the company continued to build biogas and biomethane plants, including a biomethane plant at Sourdun in France in 2017, and in 2021 it partnered with SWEN to invest 30 million euros in developing biomethanisation projects. In October 2021 the Swiss-Japanese cleantech company Kanadevia Inova (then Hitachi Zosen Inova) took over Schmack Biogas Service GmbH and microbEnergy GmbH, expanding its expertise and footprint in the field of renewable gases. The business was subsequently rebranded Kanadevia Inova Schmack GmbH while retaining the Schmack name and its Schwandorf base. Today Kanadevia Inova Schmack describes itself as a complete provider (Komplettanbieter) for biogas plants. Its core business is recovering renewable energy from waste materials, around which it has built a broad service offering: project development, construction of entire plants and system solutions, repowering and modernisation of existing plants, components, custom manufacturing of spare parts, technical and biological service, and operational management. Its customers include farmers, municipal utilities and power supply companies, each of whom can design an individual service concept. The company is part of the Kanadevia Inova Group and operates under the group's compliance framework, including a SpeakUp whistleblowing hotline. It remains active in Germany and internationally, with projects and references in France and Switzerland, including a power-to-gas plant in Dietikon, Switzerland, that won the Swiss Watt d'Or energy award.

History

Schmack Biogas was founded in 1995 on the initiative of Ulrich Schmack, the son of sheep farmers, and became one of the pioneers of the German biogas industry. The company built biogas plants and developed a service business around their maintenance, operation and optimisation, based in Schwandorf in Bavaria. At one point its shares were included in the ÖkoDAX, the German sustainability index. In 2009, after experiencing liquidity problems, the company was acquired by the Viessmann Group, a German heating and renewable-energy technology group. Under Viessmann ownership, Schmack Biogas continued to build biogas and biomethane plants. In 2017 it won the contract to build a biomethane plant at Sourdun in France, and in 2021 it partnered with SWEN to invest 30 million euros in creating biomethanisation projects. In October 2021, the Swiss-Japanese cleantech company Kanadevia Inova (then operating as Hitachi Zosen Inova) took over Schmack Biogas Service GmbH and microbEnergy GmbH, expanding its expertise and footprint in the field of renewable gases. The Schmack business was integrated into the Kanadevia Inova Group and rebranded Kanadevia Inova Schmack GmbH, while the company retained the Schmack name and its Schwandorf headquarters. The official website states: "We remain Schmack. Now as part of the HZI Group." Since the takeover, Kanadevia Inova Schmack has continued to operate as a complete provider for biogas plants, covering plant construction, repowering, components and service. Its technology has been used in notable projects, including Switzerland's first industrial power-to-gas plant with biological methanation in Dietikon, Zurich, which began producing green gas from wastewater and waste in March 2022 and was inaugurated in May 2022. In January 2023 the Dietikon project, featuring Kanadevia Inova technology, received the Swiss Watt d'Or energy award. The company remains active in Germany and internationally, with references in France and Switzerland.
