Overview
Kaiserkogelhütte (also written Kaiserkogel-Hütte) is a mountain refuge (Schutzhütte) operated by the Eschenau-St. Pölten section of the Österreichischer Touristenklub (Austrian Tourist Club, ÖTK). It sits on the Kaiserkogel in the Türnitzer Alps at 716 metres above sea level, in the rolling Alpine foothills of Lower Austria between the Pielach and Traisen rivers, above the rooftops of the provincial capital St. Pölten. The hut is open year-round, with Tuesday and Wednesday as rest days. The refuge is run as a non-smoking hut and offers down-to-earth, ecological mountain-hut cuisine. Its facilities are described as simple but practical: mattress dormitories and rooms, three guest rooms seating 100 people, and 50 outdoor seats on the south terrace. It is a base point on several regional and Austrian long-distance hiking trails, including the Pielachtaler Rundwanderweg 652, the Traisentaler Rundwanderweg 655, the Voralpenweg 04 and the Niederösterreichischer Mariazellerweg 06. Numerous marked ascent routes lead to the hut from Eschenau, Steubach, Geiseben, Rotheau, Rabenstein an der Pielach and Hofstetten-Grünau. A transition route leads over Geiseben to the Josef-Franz Hütte of Naturfreunde Österreich on the Geißbühel. The hut is managed by Bärbel Riegler together with ÖTK Eschenau. Behind the hut stands a radio mast of the St. Pölten amateur radio operators, equipped with a webcam pointed towards St. Pölten that transmits an image every five minutes and archives past images. The Kaiserkogelhütte is a small, locally rooted hospitality brand within Austria's organised hiking and mountain-refuge network, rather than a commercial chain or product line.
History
The Kaiserkogelhütte is a Schutzhütte (mountain refuge) of the Sektion Eschenau St. Pölten of the Österreichischer Touristenklub (Austrian Tourist Club, ÖTK). It is located on the Kaiserkogel in the Türnitzer Alps at 716 metres above sea level, between the Pielach and Traisen rivers in the hilly Alpine foothills of Lower Austria. The hut is open all year round, with Tuesday and Wednesday as rest days. As a refuge of the Austrian Tourist Club, it forms part of Austria's long-established network of hiking huts maintained by alpine and tourist associations. The hut serves as a Stützpunkt (base point) on several regional and Austrian long-distance hiking trails: the Pielachtaler Rundwanderweg 652, the Traisentaler Rundwanderweg 655, the Voralpenweg 04 and the Niederösterreichischer Mariazellerweg 06. Numerous marked ascent routes lead to the hut, for example from Eschenau or Steubach on foot in about one hour each; by car from Eschenau about 3 km to the Hagelbauer car park and then about 20 minutes on foot; from Geiseben over the Bärntaler Lacke in about 1¼ hours; from Rotheau over the Ehreneckerkogel in about 1½ to 2 hours; from Rabenstein an der Pielach in about 2 hours; and from Hofstetten-Grünau over the Plambachecker Höhe in about 2 to 2½ hours. A transition route leads over Geiseben to the Josef-Franz Hütte of Naturfreunde Österreich on the Geißbühel, with a walking time of about 2 to 2½ hours. The hut is run as a non-smoking hut and offers down-to-earth ecological Schutzhaus cuisine. Its facilities are simple but practical: mattress dormitories and rooms, three guest rooms for 100 people, and 50 outdoor seats on the south terrace. It is managed by Bärbel Riegler together with ÖTK Eschenau. Behind the hut there is a radio mast of the St. Pölten amateur radio operators with a webcam directed towards St. Pölten, which transmits an image every five minutes and can later be retrieved from an archive. The hut offers views to the north over the provincial capital as far as the Jauerling, and to the east and south over the surrounding foothills from Peilstein to the Ötscher.
