Overview
Kahlgrund Verkehrs-GmbH (KVG) is a transport company headquartered in Schöllkrippen. It operates a network of commercial and public-service bus lines in the district of Aschaffenburg, in neighboring Hesse, and in the district of Miltenberg. This includes the Kahlgrund Express, an hourly express bus connection between Schöllkrippen and Aschaffenburg. With 70 employees and its own fleet of 35 modern low-floor buses, KVG serves approximately 6 million passengers per year, supported by partner companies from the region that provide an additional 35 vehicles and driving personnel. KVG is also responsible for the maintenance of the Kahlgrundbahn, a 24-kilometer railway line from Kahl am Main to Schöllkrippen; train operations are currently carried out by Westfrankenbahn, a subsidiary of DB Regio.
History
In 1897, engineer Hermann Christner from Hanau received the concession to build the 23-kilometer railway line from Kahl am Main to Schöllkrippen. The line was put into operation on 28 October 1898, with two steam locomotives named "Kahl" and "Alzenau" and six passenger cars. The opening of rail operations in the Kahlgrund improved conditions for workers in the region, who could now reach their workplaces in neighboring towns comfortably without the arduous long walk. This brought money into the area and led to construction. Today, KVG operates bus lines and maintains the Kahlgrundbahn, a 24-kilometer railway line from Kahl am Main to Schöllkrippen.
