Overview
The Münchner Künstlerhaus is a cultural venue in the heart of Munich whose building was ceremonially inaugurated on 29 March 1900. It hosts concerts, exhibitions, dance, literature, cabaret and theatre evenings, and can be booked as an event location. Its history is tied to a group of prominent Munich artists and the 1873-founded artists' society Allotria.
History
The Münchner Künstlerhaus was born from a long-held dream of Munich artists for a house of their own. The idea was championed by a legendary Munich artists' community known worldwide in the late 19th century, led by founding fathers Franz von Lenbach, Gabriel von Seidl, Fritz August von Kaulbach, Ferdinand von Miller and Lorenz von Gedon; the artists' society Allotria, founded in 1873, was especially committed to a 'house for all artists of the city'. In 1893 Prince Regent Luitpold of Wittelsbach laid the foundation stone, and architect Gabriel von Seidl began building the imposing structure in the style of the turn of the century. A document was walled in stating that the house should be a gathering place for all Munich artists, a centre for cheerfulness, counsel and first action. On 29 March 1900 Munich celebrated the inauguration of its stylish artists' meeting point. The founding fathers joined together in the Münchner-Künstlerhaus-Verein, and within a short time the Münchner Künstlerhaus became a glittering centre of cultural life. While the first major art exhibitions were presented in the famous Munich Glaspalast, the grand bourgeoisie and artists celebrated brilliant festivities in the neighbouring Künstlerhaus that were soon heard of throughout Europe. A long lean period followed, not only for the cultural sector.
