History
The idea of the Künstlerdorf emerged in 1983, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Old Town Hall. Under the leadership of then municipal director Hans Dillmann, the head of the adult education centre Dr. Claus Urban, and the then head of the Literaturbüro Düsseldorf Rolfrafael Schröer, the wish was first formulated to establish a town writer and a town artist in Schöppingen. The founding idea coincided with the withdrawal of a NATO unit that had brought over a thousand Dutch and US soldiers with their families to Schöppingen between 1963 and 1987. The idea of the Künstlerdorf took shape through the vacancy of the Hof Schulze-Johann and the further purchase of the Hof Schulze-Dorfkönig in the centre of the municipality of Schöppingen. The purchase and functional conversion of the farms was made possible by urban renewal funds of the state of NRW and funds of the municipality. From 1989 to 1998 the Künstlerdorf Schöppingen was run by an association of the same name. According to the official website, it has been an internationally active cultural production and residency site for artists since 1989.
