Overview

The Köpenicker Zupforchester is a plucked-string orchestra based in Berlin-Köpenick, Germany. It was founded in 1950 under the name "Mandolinen-Orchester Köpenick" and initially led by Fritz Fickler. The ensemble consists of roughly two dozen musicians and is built around mandolin, mandola, guitar and double bass, sometimes augmented by transverse flute, recorder, clarinet, oboe, cello, piano, harpsichord, accordion or voice. Its repertoire spans different eras from the Baroque to the present and also includes folkloristic, Latin American and light entertainment works. From 1967 to 2007 the orchestra was directed by Walter Neugebauer. In 1993 it was affiliated with the Musikschule Köpenick, today the Joseph-Schmidt-Musikschule in Berlin-Treptow-Köpenick. The musicians can look back on numerous appearances on DDR television, three CD productions, successful concert tours to Hungary, Spain and Sweden, and six successful participations in the German Orchestra Competition (Deutscher Orchesterwettbewerb). From 2007 to 2011 the artistic direction lay in the hands of Ute Franzke, and from 2011 to 2013 Panagiotis Papadopoulus conducted the orchestra. In November 2013 the composer and conductor Erik Kross took over the musical direction. On 10 March 2003 the registered association "Köpenicker Zupforchester e.V." was founded out of the already existing orchestra.
