Overview

Kömpf GmbH & Co. KG (stylized KÖMPF) is a German family-owned company in the building materials and home improvement sector, headquartered in Calw-Stammheim. Founded in 1934 by Fritz Kömpf, the company has grown from a small building materials trader into a regional group operating two large DIY stores (Bauzentren) in Calw and Sindelfingen, a building materials trade business, a rental service, a container and recycling service, and a substantial online retail operation. The company is managed by brothers Wolfgang and Dieter Kömpf, representing the third generation of family leadership. In 2021, Kömpf generated revenue of €113.1 million and employed 436 people. The company is a member of Eurobaustoff, Europe's largest building materials trading cooperation, which provides purchasing advantages and specialist expertise. Kömpf operates the online shop Kömpf24 and 26 niche online shops covering products such as pond supplies, barbecue equipment, fencing, tiles, bathrooms, garage doors, garden supplies, workwear, and wood products, as well as brand-specific shops for Weka, Karibu, Wolf Finnhaus, and Skan Holz. The company also runs a certified recycling center in Calw and offers disposal services with 14 specialized vehicles. Kömpf publishes its own print magazine twice a year since 2018 and employs 15 assembly teams across Germany for on-site installation of products like fencing and garden houses.

History

The history of Kömpf begins in 1900, when brothers Georg and Fritz Kömpf, together with three other colleagues, founded the company 'Süddeutsche Baugesellschaft Stammheim'. After a dispute with his brother, Fritz Kömpf founded 'Kömpf Baustoffhandel' in 1934. In 1962, a basement warehouse hall was built. In 1973, the company was converted into a GmbH. In 1978, the warehouse was expanded and a tile studio and additional sales and office space were built. In 1984, Kömpf joined the building materials cooperation Interpares, later Eurobaustoff. In 1985, brothers Wolfgang and Dieter Kömpf took over management in the third generation from their father Rolf Kömpf. At that time, Kömpf had 12 employees and revenue equivalent to €2.5 million. In 1990, the Kömpf container service was founded. In 1997, a new location was opened in the Kimmichwiesen industrial area in Calw under the name 'Bauzentrum Kömpf'. That year, the company already generated €53 million. In 2000, another building center was opened in Sindelfingen, whose garden exhibition was completed in 2005. Also in 2006, Kömpf built a new recycling center in the Stammheimer Feld in Calw. In 2010, the Kömpf online shop portal started with 4 online shops (workwear and occupational safety, garden supplies, pond construction and pond technology, barbecue supplies). In 2012, another warehouse hall was built, doubling storage capacity at the Calw building center. In 2013, the operating area at the recycling center was expanded and its handling capacity increased. In 2014, after further expansion, the online shop moved to Unterhaugstett. Also in 2014, expansion of the building center in Calw began, more than doubling it from 5,000 to 12,000 m², inaugurated in 2016. In the same year, Kömpf introduced the 'easyKauf' purchasing system in partnership with Flagbit in its building center, allowing customers to inform themselves online about the range via info-multimedia terminals during their visit and then have items delivered home. In 2019, 28 of the company's online shops were relaunched. In 2020, the recycling center was expanded by 4,000 m². In May 2023, construction began on a new building for the online shop 'Kömpf24' to consolidate the previously three warehouse and two office locations in Gechingen, Unterhaugstett, and Althengstett. This site will also house the headquarters for its 15 assembly teams, two master workshops for repairs, and a showroom.
