Overview
Just Eat Takeaway.com is a Netherlands-based online food-ordering and delivery group whose platforms allow customers to browse restaurant menus, place orders and arrange delivery or collection through websites and mobile applications. The company began in 2000 as Thuisbezorgd.nl, founded by Jitse Groen after he encountered difficulties ordering food online. Groen initially considered building a broader online marketplace for consumer goods, but restaurant delivery generated the clearest demand, leading the company to concentrate on food ordering. The business grew gradually during its early years and benefited from the wider adoption of broadband internet in the early 2000s. It later expanded beyond the Netherlands through acquisitions, investments and the development of locally recognizable operating brands. The corporate identity Takeaway.com became prominent as the group entered additional European markets. Its portfolio has included Takeaway.com, Thuisbezorgd.nl, Lieferando, Pyszne.pl, 10bis in Israel, SkipTheDishes in Canada, and Menulog in Australia and New Zealand. Depending on the market, orders may be fulfilled by restaurants using their own drivers or by couriers coordinated through the platform. The company obtained institutional funding in the 2010s, completed an initial public offering in 2016 and pursued an acquisition-led international strategy. Important transactions included the purchase of Israeli platform 10bis, the acquisition of German delivery businesses from Delivery Hero, and the merger with Just Eat. The Just Eat transaction substantially increased the group's geographic reach and created the current Just Eat Takeaway identity. Regulatory review in the United Kingdom required the two businesses to remain operationally separate until approval was granted in April 2020. Just Eat Takeaway subsequently expanded into the United States by acquiring Grubhub in an all-stock transaction announced in 2020. The deal was intended to create a larger international food-delivery group, but Grubhub later became a significant strategic and financial burden as competition, delivery economics and investor expectations changed. In 2022, Just Eat Takeaway sold its stake in Brazilian and Colombian platform iFood to Prosus for €1.8 billion. In 2024, it agreed to sell Grubhub to Wonder Group for $650 million, a major reduction from the value attributed to the acquisition when the transaction was announced. The group has also reshaped its geographic footprint. It exited Norway and Portugal in 2022 and discontinued operations in Romania the same year. It has used different local brands and business models rather than imposing a single universal consumer name in every country. In Europe, Lieferando and Thuisbezorgd.nl are particularly important market-facing brands, while SkipTheDishes and Menulog provide local identities in Canada and Australia. Just Eat Takeaway became a major sports and brand-marketing sponsor through its UEFA partnership, including sponsorship of men's and women's club competitions. The company was listed in London and Amsterdam for part of its independent corporate history, but announced the removal of its London listing in 2024, citing limited liquidity and administrative costs. Prosus announced a €4.1 billion offer in February 2025 and completed the acquisition in October 2025. The transaction ended Just Eat Takeaway's period as an independent public company and placed it within Prosus's broader technology and food-delivery investment portfolio. Founder and long-serving chief executive Jitse Groen announced that he would leave the CEO role on 1 January 2026, with Roberto Gandolfo designated as his successor.
History
Just Eat Takeaway traces its origins to Thuisbezorgd.nl, established in the Netherlands in 2000 by Jitse Groen. The idea arose from the practical difficulty of finding restaurant menus and placing food orders online. Although Groen initially imagined a broader consumer-goods service, food ordering proved to be the strongest opportunity. Early growth was slow; co-founder Ruben Eilander left in 2002, and Groen later described relying on student loans while developing the company. Wider broadband adoption around 2003 helped online ordering become more viable, and Groen left his studies to work full-time on the business. The company developed from a Dutch ordering website into a wider European marketplace. It accepted Bitcoin for a period beginning in 2013 and raised significant venture funding, including a €13 million investment from Prime Ventures in 2012 and a €74 million Series B round led by Macquarie Capital and Prime Ventures in 2014. It listed publicly in 2016, raising €328 million at an initial valuation of approximately €993 million. During this period, the group increasingly used the Takeaway.com identity in international markets. It left the United Kingdom in 2016, selling its customer portfolio there to Just Eat, a decision that preceded the companies' eventual combination. International expansion continued through acquisitions. Takeaway.com acquired Vietnammm.com in 2013, although its interest in the Vietnamese business was later sold to Woowa Brothers in 2019. Pizza.be in Belgium was rebranded as Takeaway.com in 2017. The company bought Israeli ordering service 10bis and Bulgarian platform BGmenu.com in 2018, and acquired Lieferheld, Pizza.de and Foodora's German operations from Delivery Hero in 2019. These transactions expanded its local customer bases and strengthened its position in several European markets. In 2019, Takeaway.com proposed acquiring Just Eat. Just Eat shareholders approved the deal in January 2020, and the transaction made Just Eat a subsidiary in February. The UK Competition and Markets Authority temporarily required the businesses to remain separate while it examined the merger, but granted unconditional clearance on 23 April 2020. The combined company adopted the Just Eat Takeaway name and operated a portfolio of market-specific brands rather than immediately replacing every local identity. The group then pursued a major US expansion. In 2020 it announced the acquisition of Grubhub in an all-stock transaction. The deal closed amid intense competition in food delivery, and the US business later attracted investor pressure for a sale or other strategic solution. In parallel, the company sold its stake in iFood to Prosus in 2022 for €1.8 billion. It acquired Slovakia's Bistro.sk in 2021, while exiting Norway and Portugal in April 2022 and Romania in June 2022. Brand-building became an important part of the post-merger strategy. In 2021, Just Eat Takeaway became a sponsor of UEFA men's and women's club competitions, extending an earlier relationship connected with UEFA Euro 2020. The sponsorship associated the platform with major European sporting events and supported awareness of its consumer brands. The company later narrowed its strategic scope. It agreed in 2024 to sell Grubhub to Wonder Group for $650 million, a substantial decline from the value associated with the 2020 acquisition announcement. It also announced the delisting of its London shares, leaving Amsterdam as its remaining public-market venue before the later takeover. Prosus announced a €4.1 billion acquisition offer in February 2025 and completed the purchase in October 2025. Just Eat Takeaway consequently ceased to be an independent public company and became part of Prosus's technology and food-delivery portfolio. Groen announced his departure as CEO effective 1 January 2026, with Roberto Gandolfo selected to succeed him. The company also announced an intention to stop operating in Bulgaria from 15 September 2026.
