Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Jio is the consumer-facing telecommunications brand of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms and part of Reliance Industries. It operates a nationwide wireless network in India and provides mobile voice and data services, fixed broadband, wireless home internet, enterprise connectivity, digital applications, and branded consumer devices. The company is headquartered in Navi Mumbai and operates across all 22 Indian telecom circles. The business began as Infotel Broadband Services Limited, incorporated in 2007. Reliance Industries acquired a controlling stake in the company in 2010 after Infotel won broadband wireless spectrum in every Indian telecom circle. The company was renamed Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited in 2013 and built a network around an all-IP architecture and 4G LTE technology. This infrastructure-first approach allowed Jio to launch voice over LTE and high-volume mobile data services without maintaining a conventional legacy 2G or 3G network. Jio soft-launched its network to employees and partners in December 2015 and opened commercial service on 5 September 2016. Its initial offer of free voice services and promotional data triggered rapid customer adoption and a fundamental repricing of Indian mobile connectivity. Competitors expanded or discounted data plans, pursued consolidation, and challenged aspects of Jio's market entry and interconnection arrangements. Jio became India's largest mobile network operator and one of the world's largest by subscriber count. Beyond mobile communications, Jio developed a broader digital ecosystem. JioFiber, later marketed as JioFiber broadband, added fiber-to-the-home internet, television-related services, and fixed-line voice. JioBusiness extended connectivity and digital tools to companies, while JioAirFiber used the company's 5G network to provide fixed wireless access without a last-mile fiber connection. Jio has also introduced satellite-connectivity initiatives, although the availability and scope of individual services can vary over time. The brand's device portfolio has included LYF smartphones, JioPhone feature phones, JioPhone Next smartphones developed with Google, Jio Bharat 4G feature phones, JioFi wireless hotspots, and connected products such as JioTag and JioTag Air. Its software portfolio has included account management, television and film streaming, music, news, cloud storage, video meetings, payments, gaming, health, commerce, home services, and device-management applications. Several of these services have been reorganized, renamed, bundled, or offered through related Reliance businesses. Jio launched commercial 5G service in October 2022 in selected Indian cities and reported nationwide 5G rollout completion in 2023. Its network strategy has involved spectrum acquisitions, spectrum sharing, domestic and international equipment suppliers, fiber deployment, and partnerships with technology companies. The brand is positioned around broad access, integrated services, high-volume data usage, and relatively affordable connectivity. Its principal strategic significance is not only its telecom subscriber base but also its role as the connectivity layer for Reliance's wider digital, retail, media, commerce, and enterprise ecosystem.
History
Jio's corporate predecessor was Infotel Broadband Services Limited, incorporated in Ahmedabad in February 2007. In 2010, Reliance Industries acquired a 95 percent stake after Infotel won broadband wireless spectrum covering all 22 Indian telecom circles. The acquisition gave Reliance a nationwide foundation for entering telecommunications. The company was renamed Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited in January 2013. Jio built a new nationwide network based primarily on 4G LTE and an all-IP architecture. It planned a national launch in the middle of the 2010s, but the timetable moved as network construction and regulatory approvals continued. In December 2015, the service was soft-launched for employees and business partners. Commercial availability began on 5 September 2016, initially with free voice calls and promotional data. The offer produced exceptionally rapid adoption: Jio reported 16 million subscribers during its first month, passed 50 million in 83 days, and crossed 100 million subscribers in February 2017. By October 2017, its subscriber base was reported at approximately 130 million. The launch disrupted India's established telecom model. Jio's low-cost data and free domestic voice offer encouraged heavy data consumption and forced incumbent operators to reduce prices, increase allowances, or consolidate. A dispute developed over interconnection capacity, with Jio alleging that established operators were restricting access and incumbents arguing that they could not accommodate the volume and asymmetry of traffic. Indian regulators became involved, and the operators subsequently expanded interconnection arrangements. Jio also broadened beyond mobile service. It developed a large portfolio of applications covering account management, messaging, video, music, television, news, cloud storage, payments, gaming, health, commerce, and collaboration. JioFiber was tested under the Jio GigaFiber name before its formal launch in September 2019. The fixed-broadband service combined fiber internet with voice and entertainment-related offerings. JioBusiness, introduced in 2021, packaged connectivity with selected digital tools for business customers. The brand expanded into hardware through the LYF smartphone range, JioPhone feature phones, the Google-supported JioPhone Next smartphone, JioFi hotspots, and later Jio Bharat devices. These products supported a strategy of linking affordable hardware to Jio's network and applications. Connected-device products, including JioTag and JioTag Air, extended the brand into consumer electronics and device tracking. Jio entered 5G after India's 2022 spectrum auction, acquiring spectrum in the 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz bands in addition to existing holdings. It launched 5G in October 2022 in selected cities and expanded rapidly during 2023. The company announced nationwide completion in August 2023. JioAirFiber, introduced in 2023, used 5G fixed wireless access to provide home broadband without a conventional last-mile fiber installation. Jio also announced a satellite-based broadband initiative known as JioSpaceFiber. The business has remained part of Reliance's wider digital ecosystem rather than operating as a separately listed public company. Its infrastructure and technology relationships have included Samsung, Cisco, Nokia, Ericsson, Ciena, HFCL, Google, and other suppliers or partners. Jio's development has therefore combined telecom network construction, aggressive consumer pricing, integrated digital services, and Reliance's broader retail, media, and technology strategy.
