History

Jena-Optronik's roots go back to the multispectral imager MKF-6 and the first star sensors, developments that started in the early 1970s by VEB Carl Zeiss Jena. In 1991, Deutsche Aerospace (now Airbus Defence & Space) founded the company Jena-Optronik GmbH together with Jenoptik; after registration in the commercial register, Jena-Optronik officially began operating as an enterprise in April 1992, with its headquarters in Jena, Thuringia. The company's initial phase was characterized by contributions to scientific missions carried out by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA. In May 1996, the remote sensing instrument MOMS-2P (Modular Optoelectronic Multispectral Scanner) was installed on the space station MIR and began operational activity, offering the possibility for the first time ever of capturing data. Jena-Optronik has since marked 30 years of history, and its sensors have been used on missions including the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, Northrop Grumman's Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV), and Artemis I.
