Overview
Italtile, officially Italtile Limited, is a South African home-improvement company whose business spans retailing, tile and sanitaryware manufacturing, importing, distribution, franchising and property investment. The group is best known to consumers through three retail formats: Italtile Retail, a premium-oriented chain; CTM, its largest and mid-market retail brand; and TopT, a value-focused format. Across these banners, the group sells floor and wall tiles, bathroom fixtures, kitchen fixtures, related installation products and complementary home-improvement merchandise. The business was established in 1969 by Gianni Ravazzotti as Italtile Retail. Its early model was based on importing Italian tiles and selling them through a store in Alberton, Gauteng. It expanded into Cape Town and Durban in 1971 and opened its first Johannesburg store in 1972. Manufacturing became part of the group’s strategy in 1976, when it opened the Samca Floor tile factory. This move helped Italtile develop greater control over product supply and broadened its role from specialist retailer to vertically integrated home-improvement group. The CTM brand was introduced in 1983, with stores opening in Roodepoort and Stikland, Bellville. CTM subsequently became the group’s largest retail banner and an important vehicle for serving middle-market consumers. Italtile Limited listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, now the JSE Limited, in 1988. Its head office moved to Randburg in 1989 and later to Bryanston, Sandton, in 2000, where the group remains headquartered. The same year also marked the beginning of the group’s trading activities in Australia. Italtile’s operating model combines retail outlets with proprietary and exclusive product ranges, manufacturing subsidiaries, import businesses and a property portfolio. Manufacturing is conducted through Ceramic Industries and Ezee Tile, while importing and distribution activities include International Tap Distributors, Cedar Point and Distribution Centre. The group also holds a 30% shareholding in Easylife Kitchens. Its portfolio of exclusive or group-associated product brands includes Kilimanjaro, Amalfi, Tivoli, Organic Earth, Diva, Quadratec, Styletec, Megatec, Betta, Homegrown, NuVinyl, Elf, ProGrip and Promax. The group serves customers primarily in South Africa, while its broader regional network reaches markets in Southern and Eastern Africa. Export destinations identified for the business include Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Malawi, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Madagascar. Reference material describes a network of 203 stores in 2025, comprising 14 Italtile Retail stores, 94 CTM stores and 95 TopT stores. The group also has manufacturing capacity across a network of factories, with most facilities in South Africa and additional operations elsewhere in Africa and Australia. Italtile has developed beyond a conventional retail chain. Its activities include franchise operations, supply and support services, manufacturing and real-estate investment. Reference material for 2025 identifies property assets valued at approximately R4 billion and describes revenue contributions from franchising, property investment, support services, manufacturing and retail. The group has also pursued energy and social-investment initiatives. During the 2024 financial year, its corporate social responsibility division and foundation reportedly spent R114 million on social initiatives, while solar installations generated more than 8,000 MWh of electricity. Italtile therefore occupies a distinctive position in the South African home-improvement market: it is simultaneously a consumer-facing retail group, a producer of building-finishing materials and a regional distribution and property platform.
History
Italtile was founded in 1969 by Gianni Ravazzotti under the name Italtile Retail. The original business imported tiles from Italy and sold them from a store in Alberton, Gauteng. The company’s early identity was therefore closely tied to specialist tile retail and international sourcing rather than to the broad home-improvement platform it later became. The first stage of geographic expansion followed in 1971, when the group opened stores in Cape Town and Durban. A Johannesburg store followed in 1972. These openings established a multi-city South African retail presence and provided the foundation for later development of a national store network. In 1976, Italtile opened the Samca Floor tile factory, marking an important shift toward manufacturing and greater control over product supply. In 1983, the group introduced the CTM retail brand. Its first stores opened in Roodepoort, Gauteng, and Stikland in Bellville during the same year. CTM ultimately became Italtile’s largest retail brand and enabled the group to address a broader, mid-market customer base than the original Italtile format. The company’s move into multiple retail propositions later continued with the development of TopT as a budget-oriented chain, while Italtile Retail retained a more premium positioning. Italtile Limited listed on the JSE Limited in 1988. The listing gave the group a public-market structure as it expanded its retail, manufacturing and property activities. In 1989, the head office moved to Randburg, Gauteng. In 2000, the headquarters moved again to Bryanston, Sandton, and the group began trading in Australia. These developments coincided with a gradual broadening of the company’s operating geography and business scope. The group’s scale increased substantially over the following decades. Reference material records group revenue of R1 billion in 2002 and R5 billion in 2015, although these figures are not expanded upon here because the available reference does not provide a separate financial-report link or detailed accounting context. Italtile’s business model increasingly combined retail stores with manufacturing subsidiaries, exclusive product brands, importing companies, support services and real-estate holdings. The contemporary group operates three principal store formats. Italtile Retail serves the premium end of the market, CTM operates as the largest and broadly mid-market chain, and TopT targets value-conscious consumers. The group’s products cover tiles, bathrooms, kitchens, flooring and associated installation or plumbing needs. It also sells numerous brands exclusive to or associated with its retail platform, including Kilimanjaro, Amalfi, Tivoli, Organic Earth, Diva, Quadratec, Styletec, Megatec, Betta, Homegrown, NuVinyl, Elf, ProGrip and Promax. Manufacturing and supply are conducted through businesses including Ceramic Industries and Ezee Tile. Import and distribution operations include International Tap Distributors, Cedar Point and Distribution Centre, with facilities in South Africa’s Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. The group also owns or operates a portfolio of factories across Africa and Australia and has a 30% shareholding in Easylife Kitchens. Its regional export markets include Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Malawi, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Madagascar. By 2025, reference material described a network of 203 stores: 14 Italtile Retail locations, 94 CTM locations and 95 TopT locations. It also described annual tile-production capacity of 52 million square metres and a property portfolio valued at approximately R4 billion. The group’s stated revenue mix for that period was described as including retail, manufacturing, supply and support services, real-estate investment and franchising, illustrating the breadth of its integrated model. Italtile has also pursued environmental and social initiatives. In the 2024 financial year, its corporate social responsibility division and foundation reportedly spent R114 million on social initiatives. The group also generated more than 8,000 MWh of solar power during that year. These activities form part of the company’s broader effort to manage energy use and maintain a social-investment programme alongside its commercial operations.
