Overview
Instagram is an American social networking service owned by Meta Platforms. Its core experience allows people and organizations to create profiles, publish photographs and videos, follow other accounts, interact through likes and comments, exchange direct messages, and discover content through feeds, search, hashtags, locations, and recommendations. The service is available through mobile applications and the web and operates across international markets in multiple languages. The company began in San Francisco as Burbn, a location-based check-in application developed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The founders concluded that the product was too similar to existing check-in services and refocused it around mobile photography. They renamed it Instagram, combining the ideas of an instant camera and a telegram. The iOS application launched in October 2010 and attracted users quickly, helped by simple editing tools, filters, an initially square image format, and a lightweight social graph. Instagram reached one million registered users within two months and expanded rapidly during its first years. Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012 in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at approximately $1 billion. Facebook said that Instagram would retain operational independence, although the service subsequently benefited from the parent company’s infrastructure, advertising systems, safety operations, and commercial tools. Android support arrived in April 2012, followed by web profiles and broader browser access later that year. The service gradually moved beyond still photographs: it added video, direct messaging, multi-image posts, Stories, live video, shopping features, creator tools, and short-form video through Reels. Stories, introduced in 2016, enabled users to publish sequences of posts that generally disappear after 24 hours and became a major part of the platform’s daily use. IGTV was launched in 2018 as a destination for longer vertical video but was later discontinued as Meta concentrated on Reels and other video formats. Reels launched in 2020 amid intensifying competition with TikTok and became a central discovery and entertainment format. Instagram has also introduced collaborative viewing, Notes, creator subscriptions and monetization tools, expanded messaging capabilities, and experiments involving verified badges and generative or algorithmic recommendation systems. Instagram’s business model is primarily advertising-supported. Advertisers can reach audiences through feed, Stories, Reels, Explore, and other placements, while creators and businesses use professional accounts, branded content, product catalogs, shopping tools, and analytics. The service is influential in fashion, beauty, food, travel, entertainment, news, commerce, and political communication. Its visual design and recommendation systems have helped shape influencer marketing and online cultural trends. The platform has also faced sustained criticism and regulatory scrutiny. Concerns include the effects of image-based social media on young people’s well-being, the handling of minors’ data, addictive or recommendation-driven design, harassment, misinformation, moderation decisions, illegal content, and changes to visibility and engagement metrics. Meta has responded with safety controls, parental and teen protections, moderation policies, privacy changes, and product experiments such as hiding public like counts. Instagram remains an active Meta service and one of the world’s most prominent consumer internet brands.
History
Instagram was developed in San Francisco by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Its predecessor, Burbn, combined check-ins with plans, photographs, and social features. After receiving seed funding in 2010, the founders narrowed the concept to mobile photo sharing, where they believed a simpler product could stand out from location-based competitors. The resulting name referred to an instant camera and a telegram. The iOS application launched on October 6, 2010. Its early identity rested on square photographs, built-in filters, location tags, hashtags, a stream of followed accounts, and a deliberately simple publishing workflow. The service grew from one million registered users within two months to ten million within its first year. In 2011 it raised venture funding from investors including Benchmark and other technology figures. A further financing round in 2012 preceded its sale to Facebook. Instagram released an Android application on April 3, 2012. It was downloaded more than one million times in its first day, broadening the service beyond Apple’s mobile ecosystem. Facebook announced the acquisition on April 9, 2012, for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock; the transaction formally closed later that year after regulatory review. Facebook initially emphasized that Instagram would remain independently managed. Over time, the service became increasingly connected to Meta’s advertising, infrastructure, safety, and account systems while preserving a distinct product identity. The platform expanded steadily after the acquisition. Browser-based profiles appeared in 2012, and the original square-only restriction was relaxed in 2015. Instagram added direct messaging, video posts, multiple-image albums, comment controls, and a redesigned visual interface. Stories launched in 2016, adapting a temporary-posting model that had been popularized by Snapchat. Live video and other interactive formats followed. Windows support and mobile-web publishing broadened access, although some platform-specific applications were later discontinued or replaced by progressive web technology. In 2018 Instagram launched IGTV for longer vertical video and changed leadership when Systrom and Krieger departed. Adam Mosseri became head of Instagram. The company subsequently experimented with hiding public like counts, removing the activity feed that exposed the actions of followed users, and adding tools intended to limit harassment. IGTV was ultimately retired in 2022 as short-form video became more strategically important. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Instagram introduced Co-Watching and other features supporting remote interaction. Reels launched in 2020 as Meta’s principal response to the rise of TikTok-style short video. The service continued to add collaborative live video, pronoun fields, Notes, GIF comments, creator and commerce tools, and paid verification experiments. Recommendations increasingly became a major route to discovery, meaning users could encounter content from accounts they did not follow. Instagram’s growth has produced substantial cultural and commercial influence. It is a major channel for creators, celebrities, publishers, retailers, advertisers, and small businesses, and it has helped establish influencer marketing as a mainstream advertising category. At the same time, the platform has been criticized over teen mental health, body-image pressure, harassment, misinformation, moderation practices, opaque ranking systems, and the circulation of illegal or inappropriate content. Privacy regulators have especially examined the treatment of minors. Meta has responded with account controls, teen protections, parental supervision features, content-ranking changes, and safety initiatives. Instagram remains an active global service within Meta’s family of applications.
