History
iFLYTEK began in 1999 when Liu Qingfeng, then a doctoral student at the University of Science and Technology of China, and colleagues established a voice-computing venture. The early company operated from the university campus before moving to Hefei, where local government and state-linked capital later became important supporters. The founders focused on speech recognition and related technologies at a time when voice interfaces were still primarily a research field. Liu also discussed the business concept with Kai-Fu Lee, then head of Microsoft Research Asia, who warned that Chinese developers would face strong competition from American advances in speech recognition. A new phase began in 2023 with the public introduction of iFLYTEK Spark, also called SparkDesk. The large language model extended the company's established speech and language capabilities into generative AI. Spark was updated through several releases, including versions identified as 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5, followed by Spark 4.0 in 2024. The model was developed using Huawei Ascend computing infrastructure and received approval for release under China's generative-AI regulatory system. A controversy arose in October 2023 after reports that AI devices generated politically sensitive criticism of Mao Zedong; the incident was followed by a substantial share-price decline.
