Overview
I&M Bank Limited is a Kenyan commercial bank headquartered in Nairobi and operating under the supervision of the Central Bank of Kenya. It is the Kenyan banking subsidiary of I&M Holdings Limited, a financial-services group whose businesses have expanded across East Africa. The bank serves corporations, medium-sized and smaller businesses, institutions and individual customers, with a particular historical emphasis on corporate banking and premium personal banking. The institution began in 1974 as Investments & Mortgages Limited, a privately held business providing personalized financial services to businesspeople in Nairobi. It entered the regulated banking sector in 1980, when it was registered as a financial institution under Kenya's Banking Act. Regulatory changes enabled it to become a fully licensed commercial bank in 1996. This transition provided the platform for the development of a broader deposit-taking, lending and transaction-banking business. I&M expanded through a combination of organic growth, acquisitions and regional investments. In 2002, it opened I&M Bank Tower, a prominent office building on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi's central business district. In 2003, the bank acquired Biashara Bank of Kenya, enlarging its branch network, customer base and assets. Development-finance investors DEG and PROPARCO invested in the bank in 2007; their combined shareholding was subsequently increased, giving the institution additional institutional capital and international financial-sector backing. The group then pursued a regional strategy. I&M Bank acquired a 50 percent interest in First City Bank of Mauritius in 2008; that business later became Bank One Mauritius. In 2010, it acquired a controlling interest in CF Union Bank of Tanzania, which was subsequently rebranded I&M Bank Tanzania. In 2012, I&M acquired control of Commercial Bank of Rwanda, later renamed I&M Bank Rwanda. These transactions helped turn the Kenyan bank into the principal operating company within a wider East African financial group. In Kenya, one of the most significant consolidation transactions was the integration of Giro Commercial Bank. I&M Holdings began the acquisition process in 2015, and the transaction was completed in February 2017 after regulatory approval. Giro surrendered its banking license and its business was merged into I&M Bank. The integration strengthened I&M's domestic scale and contributed to its movement into Kenya's top banking tier by assets. I&M Holdings was established in 2013 as the holding company for the group's businesses and subsidiaries. Its shares are publicly traded on the Nairobi Securities Exchange under the symbol I&M, while I&M Bank Limited remains the operating Kenyan bank. In 2020, the group opened 1 Park Avenue in Nairobi as a new headquarters facility. By November 2022, the bank reported a network of approximately 40 Kenyan branches, each with an on-site ATM, across Nairobi and a range of other Kenyan cities and towns. The bank's business scope includes current and savings accounts, payment and cash-management services, lending, trade finance, foreign-exchange services, treasury products, cards, digital banking and wealth-oriented services for personal customers. Its positioning combines a relationship-led commercial-bank model with regional group capabilities. The bank is not merely a retail branch network: its historic customer focus has included large and medium-sized companies, while its premium proposition targets individuals and affluent customers. Public information cited for September 2019 placed the bank eighth by total assets among Kenya's 40 licensed banks at that time, with assets exceeding KES 261 billion and shareholders' equity of about KES 44 billion. Those figures are historical and are not presented as current measures.
History
I&M Bank traces its origins to Investments & Mortgages Limited, founded in 1974 as a private provider of personalized financial services for businesspeople in Nairobi. The company was registered as a financial institution under Kenya's Banking Act in 1980. It became a commercial bank in 1996 after changes in the regulatory framework, marking the beginning of its development as a full-service Kenyan bank. A major early expansion occurred in 2002, when I&M Bank Tower opened on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi's central business district. The following year, I&M acquired Biashara Bank of Kenya. That transaction increased its domestic branch footprint and expanded its customer and asset base. In 2007, the development-finance institutions DEG and PROPARCO invested in the bank, acquiring a combined minority position that was later increased. Their participation provided institutional support during a period when I&M was strengthening its capital base and competitive position. The institution subsequently moved beyond Kenya. In 2008, I&M acquired half of First City Bank Limited in Mauritius; the bank later became Bank One Mauritius. In 2010, I&M acquired control of CF Union Bank of Tanzania, which was later rebranded I&M Bank Tanzania. In July 2012, the group acquired a controlling interest in Commercial Bank of Rwanda, then one of Rwanda's major banks. The Rwandan business was rebranded I&M Bank Rwanda in 2013. These investments transformed I&M from a primarily Kenyan institution into the core bank of a regional East African group. In 2013, I&M Holdings Limited was formed as the group holding company. The holding company consolidated the group's banking interests and became listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange under the symbol I&M. The operating bank continued to conduct the Kenyan commercial-banking business under the I&M Bank name. Domestic consolidation remained an important part of the bank's growth. In September 2015, I&M Holdings began acquiring Giro Commercial Bank and planning the merger of Giro's business into I&M Bank. The transaction required regulatory approval and concluded in February 2017. Giro surrendered its banking license and became part of I&M Bank Kenya. The combination enlarged I&M's domestic scale and was associated with the bank's movement into Kenya's Tier I banking segment. The bank's physical presence continued to develop alongside its regional structure. In 2020, it opened 1 Park Avenue in Nairobi as a new headquarters. By November 2022, the Kenyan business maintained roughly 40 branches with on-site ATMs. The network covered Nairobi as well as cities and towns including Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisii, Malindi, Nyeri, Thika, Kitale, Nanyuki and Meru. I&M's business model has historically balanced institutional and commercial customers with premium retail banking. Its services include deposits, loans, payment services, trade finance, cash management, foreign exchange, cards, treasury products and digital banking. The bank has emphasized large and medium-sized corporations while also serving smaller enterprises and individual customers, especially premium customers. Historical information for September 2019 ranked it eighth by assets among Kenya's licensed banks at that time. The wider I&M Group's regional presence has given the Kenyan bank a platform for cross-border banking and a broader East African identity.
