Overview

HYBE is a South Korean multinational entertainment company founded in 2005 by Bang Si-hyuk as Big Hit Entertainment. It began as a conventional music agency and recording company, but expanded substantially after the international success of BTS. The company was renamed HYBE in 2021, when it reorganized its recording and artist-management operations and presented itself as an entertainment lifestyle platform rather than a single-label agency. The company’s principal activities include recorded-music production and distribution, artist representation, concert production, merchandising, fan-community services, audiovisual content, intellectual-property development and investments in technology and entertainment companies. Its labels and affiliated businesses have been associated with artists and groups including BTS, Tomorrow X Together, SEVENTEEN, ENHYPEN, NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, ZICO and other acts. The labels operate with varying degrees of creative and operational independence under the broader HYBE structure. A major part of HYBE’s strategy has been diversification beyond recorded music. Its Weverse platform provides artist-fan communication, commerce, memberships, livestreaming and related services. HYBE has also pursued webtoon and Wattpad collaborations, audiovisual programming, merchandise, gaming and digital-asset initiatives. International expansion included partnerships with Universal Music Group, the creation of a U.S.-based global-label venture with Geffen Records, the acquisition of Ithaca Holdings and its associated properties, and the establishment of operations in Latin America and plans for India. HYBE has also expanded through acquisitions and strategic investments. It acquired Source Music, became the controlling shareholder of Pledis Entertainment, purchased KOZ Entertainment and ultimately took full ownership of Belift Lab after buying CJ ENM’s remaining interest. In 2023 it briefly became the largest shareholder of SM Entertainment before reducing and later disposing of its position amid a takeover contest involving Kakao. The company remains listed on the Korea Exchange and continues to operate as a multi-label, multinational entertainment group. Its growth has also brought governance and regulatory scrutiny, including disputes concerning ADOR and NewJeans, investigations involving Bang Si-hyuk’s alleged shareholder arrangements, and an inquiry related to alleged use of confidential information.

History

Big Hit Entertainment was established on February 1, 2005, by Bang Si-hyuk. Its early business involved recording and managing artists, including the vocal trio 8Eight and singer Lim Jeong-hee. In 2010 the company entered a joint-management arrangement with JYP Entertainment for the group 2AM. During the same period Bang began assembling BTS, with RM identified as the first member. BTS debuted under Big Hit in June 2013 and eventually became the company’s defining global act. Big Hit also experimented with partnerships and new artist projects. It formed GLAM with Source Music, but the group ended in 2014 following legal proceedings involving a member. The company’s arrangement with JYP over 2AM ended that year. Homme, a duo associated with Big Hit, later disbanded in 2018. These early changes preceded a more successful period of label building and corporate expansion. The company debuted Tomorrow X Together in 2019 and acquired Source Music that year. It also purchased the game developer Superb. In partnership with CJ ENM, Big Hit helped establish Belift Lab, whose first group, ENHYPEN, debuted in 2020. Big Hit became the majority shareholder of Pledis Entertainment in 2020, while Pledis continued to operate as a distinct label. It also acquired KOZ Entertainment, founded by rapper and producer ZICO. Digital infrastructure became central to the company’s growth. The subsidiary beNX developed Weverse and Weverse Shop, which evolved into a direct-to-fan community and commerce ecosystem. In 2021 beNX was renamed Weverse Company, following a transaction involving Naver’s V Live service. Big Hit also invested in YG Plus for merchandising and distribution cooperation and entered a strategic partnership with Universal Music Group, including a proposed global-label venture with Geffen Records. In March 2021 Big Hit Entertainment adopted the HYBE name and reorganized itself as a broader entertainment lifestyle platform. The former Big Hit recording and management division became BigHit Music within the HYBE Labels structure. HYBE America then acquired Ithaca Holdings, bringing properties such as SB Projects and Big Machine Label Group into the group. HYBE subsequently pursued partnerships in Japan, content distribution, technology and digital assets. It established ADOR in 2021 under Min Hee-jin; ADOR’s first major group, NewJeans, debuted in 2022. HYBE expanded its intellectual-property activities through original stories developed with Webtoon and Wattpad, featuring characters associated with BTS, ENHYPEN and Tomorrow X Together. It also signed a content agreement with Disney’s Asia-Pacific operations covering concert films, documentary programming and other entertainment content. In 2023 HYBE acquired a large stake in SM Entertainment, but abandoned its attempt to secure control after a bidding contest with Kakao and later reduced its holding. HYBE also signed a distribution arrangement with Tencent Music and acquired the remaining CJ ENM stake in Belift Lab. The group continued international expansion through HYBE Latin America and announced plans for an Indian subsidiary. At the same time, disputes surrounding ADOR and NewJeans produced substantial corporate and legal tension. In 2024 Min Hee-jin was removed as ADOR’s CEO and replaced by Kim Ju-young, while Min remained associated with the label’s board and production work for a period. In 2024–2025, regulators also examined alleged undisclosed shareholder arrangements involving Bang Si-hyuk and alleged insider trading connected with confidential corporate information. These matters added governance risk to a company whose business remains dependent on artist activity, label performance, global partnerships and its fan-platform ecosystem.
