Overview
Hungarian State Railways, commonly known as MÁV, is Hungary’s state-owned railway organization. Its formal corporate structure is centered on MÁV Zrt. and the wider MÁV Group. The Second World War caused extensive physical destruction. Bridges, buildings, track, locomotives, coaches, and freight wagons were destroyed, removed, or dispersed. MÁV was also involved in the deportation of Hungarian Jews to Nazi concentration camps, a grave historical fact associated with the wartime railway system. History
Hungarian railway history began with the opening of the Pest–Vác steam railway on 15 July 1846. Railway construction accelerated after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, when the Hungarian government inherited substantial obligations to subsidize privately operated railways. The financial burden encouraged the development of a state railway capable of operating major routes and imposing common technical and commercial standards. By the immediate postwar period only a fraction of the prewar rolling stock remained operational. Reconstruction proceeded rapidly, with the first postwar electrified section entering service in October 1945 and additional locomotives obtained from abroad. In the socialist era, MÁV was treated as a backbone of industrial development. Heavy traffic, limited resources, and political pressure produced chronic maintenance problems. Steam locomotive construction ended in Hungary in 1958, while diesel and electric traction expanded. The V43 electric locomotive, entering service in 1964, became a durable and widely used type. Soviet M62 diesel locomotives and M61 locomotives supplied from Sweden and associated with North American design were also important parts of the fleet. After the political and economic transition of the 1990s, MÁV faced a difficult balance between public-service obligations and commercial pressures. Rural routes were reduced or threatened with closure, although political intervention sometimes prevented planned cuts. Passenger service quality declined in many areas, while investment focused unevenly on more profitable or strategically important operations. Since 2000, modernization has included new railcars and electric multiple units, including Siemens Desiro and Stadler FLIRT equipment.
