Overview
Hrvatski Telekom d.d. is Croatia's principal integrated telecommunications operator and a member of the Deutsche Telekom group. Based in Zagreb, the company serves consumers, households, small businesses, large enterprises and public-sector customers across Croatia. Its activities cover mobile communications, fixed voice services, broadband access, television, digital services, information and communications technology, and managed communications solutions. The company emerged from the reorganization of Croatia's former postal and telecommunications organization, Hrvatska pošta i telekomunikacije, in the late 1990s. In 1998, the telecommunications business was separated from the postal business and established as Hrvatske telekomunikacije. Deutsche Telekom entered as a strategic investor during the privatization process and subsequently became the controlling shareholder. The Croatian operator later adopted the T-Com and T-Mobile commercial identities used across Deutsche Telekom's European businesses before consolidating its market-facing identity under Hrvatski Telekom and the HT brand. Hrvatski Telekom's consumer business combines mobile connectivity with fixed broadband, voice, television and converged household packages. Its mobile network is marketed through HT and associated consumer propositions, while fixed services use copper, fiber and other access technologies depending on location and network availability. The company has invested in network modernization, including 4G and 5G deployment, fiber expansion and improvements in capacity and service quality. Its television and digital offerings complement connectivity by adding entertainment, communications and online-service features. The enterprise division provides connectivity, data networking, cloud-related services, cybersecurity, unified communications, information technology and other managed solutions. These services support companies and institutions seeking outsourced communications infrastructure rather than only traditional telephone or internet access. Hrvatski Telekom also participates in the development of Croatia's digital infrastructure and is positioned as a major national provider for the country's digital transformation. The company became a listed issuer on the Zagreb Stock Exchange in 2007. Deutsche Telekom remains the controlling shareholder, while the public listing provides a domestic capital-market presence and allows other shareholders to hold interests in the company. Hrvatski Telekom has remained active through changes in technology and consumer behavior, moving from fixed-line telephony toward a converged model built around mobile data, broadband, television, digital platforms and business ICT services. Today, Hrvatski Telekom is generally positioned as a full-service, technology-led telecommunications company with national reach. Its competitive environment includes other Croatian mobile and fixed operators, particularly A1 Hrvatska and Telemach Hrvatska. Its brand proposition rests on network coverage, service reliability, bundled connectivity and the ability to provide both consumer communications and enterprise technology services under the Deutsche Telekom group umbrella.
History
Hrvatski Telekom traces its institutional origins to Hrvatska pošta i telekomunikacije, Croatia's former combined postal and telecommunications organization. During the restructuring of Croatia's communications sector in the late 1990s, the postal and telecommunications activities were separated. The telecommunications business was organized as Hrvatske telekomunikacije in 1998, creating the corporate foundation of the present-day operator. The next decisive stage was privatization. Deutsche Telekom became the strategic investor in the Croatian telecommunications company, bringing the operator into the German group's Central and Southeastern European telecommunications network. The relationship gave Hrvatski Telekom access to international management experience, technology procurement, operational practices and commercial identities associated with Deutsche Telekom. During the 2000s, the company used T-Com for fixed communications and T-Mobile for mobile services, reflecting the group's multinational branding architecture. Hrvatski Telekom expanded beyond traditional fixed voice services as mobile adoption, internet use and digital media changed the Croatian market. Mobile communications became a major growth platform, while fixed broadband, television and bundled household packages developed into important parts of the consumer proposition. The operator also modernized its access and radio networks and broadened its enterprise portfolio to include data connectivity, information technology, cloud-related services, cybersecurity and managed communications. In 2007, the company was listed on the Zagreb Stock Exchange. The listing made Hrvatski Telekom one of the most visible Croatian issuers in the domestic equity market, while Deutsche Telekom retained control. The public-company structure has continued alongside the operator's membership in the Deutsche Telekom group. The commercial presentation of the business gradually moved away from separate T-Com and T-Mobile identities toward the unified Hrvatski Telekom and HT brand. This reflected the convergence of mobile, fixed, television and digital services, as well as the customer's increasing expectation that one provider should manage multiple forms of connectivity. The company continued investing in broadband and mobile infrastructure, including fiber access and fifth-generation mobile technology. Hrvatski Telekom's more recent development has centered on digital infrastructure, network quality and the integration of telecommunications with business technology. For consumers, this means mobile data, home internet, television and related digital services. For business and public-sector customers, the company offers connectivity, data networks, cloud, cybersecurity, unified communications and other managed ICT capabilities. It remains a major Croatian telecommunications provider operating in a market that also includes A1 Hrvatska and Telemach Hrvatska.
