Hotpoint is a long-established domestic-appliance brand best known for refrigerators, washing machines, tumble dryers, cookers and other household equipment. Its name originated with an electric iron developed by American inventor Earl Richardson. The iron was designed so that its hottest area was near the front rather than in the centre, giving rise to the Hotpoint name. Richardson established the Pacific Electric Heating Company in Ontario, California, in 1906 and founded Hotpoint in 1911. The company began producing electric irons commercially in 1912 and entered electric cooking appliances in 1919. Hotpoint’s early history was closely tied to General Electric. In 1918, the Hotpoint Electric Heating Company merged with the heating-device section of General Electric to create the Edison Electric Appliance Company. A United Kingdom joint venture, Hotpoint Electric Appliance Company Limited, was established in 1920 to market electrical goods. The British business later became associated with the General Electric Company, commonly known as GEC, after GEC acquired the relevant Associated Electrical Industries interests. By the 1960s, Hotpoint was one of the leading household-appliance brands in the United Kingdom. In the United States, General Electric acquired the Hotpoint factory and business in 1927. Production subsequently became concentrated at GE’s Appliance Park complex in Louisville, Kentucky, where Hotpoint products continued to be manufactured for the American market. The brand gained broad recognition in the United States through appliances such as irons, toasters, cookers and refrigerators. In Britain and continental Europe, its range expanded across major white-goods categories, including refrigeration, laundry and cooking. The European business underwent several ownership and brand-architecture changes. Hotpoint became part of General Domestic Appliances in 1989. Merloni Elettrodomestici acquired a 50 percent interest in the business in 2002 and later bought General Electric’s remaining stake in 2008. Merloni changed its name to Indesit Company in 2005. During the following decade, Hotpoint was repositioned within a broader European portfolio and was at times marketed as Hotpoint-Ariston. From the end of 2011, the Hotpoint name was progressively used across Europe in place of the combined Hotpoint-Ariston identity. In 2014, Whirlpool acquired the European Indesit business, while General Electric’s North American appliance division was ultimately sold to Haier after a proposed sale to Electrolux was abandoned because of regulatory opposition. These transactions left Hotpoint as a brand with geographically divided stewardship: Whirlpool operated the European business for several years, while GE Appliances continued to use the brand in North America under Haier ownership. Arçelik subsequently agreed to acquire Whirlpool’s Russian operations and, in 2023, agreed with Whirlpool to combine their European appliance businesses. The resulting Beko Europe venture, majority-owned by Arçelik, holds the European Hotpoint business. Hotpoint has also been associated with important product-safety controversies. Certain Hotpoint and Indesit tumble dryers manufactured between 2004 and 2015 were subject to safety action after lint could accumulate near heating components and create a fire risk. In 2019, Whirlpool announced a recall affecting certain washing machines made between 2014 and 2018 because defective door interlocks could overheat and catch fire. A Hotpoint FF175 refrigerator-freezer was identified as the appliance involved in the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in London. Investigations concluded that an electrical fault in the appliance initiated the fire, which caused 72 deaths. Hotpoint traces its identity to Earl Richardson’s electric iron. Richardson’s design concentrated heat toward the front of the iron, inspiring the Hotpoint name. He formed the Pacific Electric Heating Company in California in 1906 and founded Hotpoint in 1911. Commercial electric-iron production began in 1912, followed by electric cookers in 1919. The company also claimed an early electric toaster, the El Tosto, and later became prominent in the American toaster market. The company entered a major corporate phase in 1918 when Hotpoint Electric Heating merged with General Electric’s heating-device section. In 1920, a joint venture was created to market electrical products in Britain. The American business was acquired fully by General Electric in 1927, while the British operation became connected to GEC and its predecessor groups. Hotpoint developed into a leading British household-appliance name during the postwar period and expanded into cooking, refrigeration and laundry equipment. General Domestic Appliances was formed in 1989, bringing Hotpoint into a reorganized appliance structure. Merloni acquired half of the business in 2002 and later acquired the remaining General Electric stake in 2008. Merloni became Indesit Company in 2005, and its European brand strategy progressively consolidated the Hotpoint identity, including the temporary Hotpoint-Ariston branding. From 2011 onward, Hotpoint was deployed more broadly across Europe. Whirlpool acquired the European Indesit business in 2014. In North America, General Electric’s appliance division was sold to Haier after the proposed Electrolux transaction failed to obtain regulatory approval. This created distinct regional ownership arrangements. In Europe, the brand later moved into the Beko Europe structure formed by Arçelik and Whirlpool, with Arçelik as the majority partner. In North America, GE Appliances continued to manufacture and market Hotpoint products under Haier ownership. The brand’s later history includes major safety events. Certain tumble dryers were investigated and recalled because lint could accumulate near heating elements. Certain washing machines were recalled for defective door interlocks. The 2017 Grenfell Tower fire was traced to an electrical fault in a Hotpoint FF175 refrigerator-freezer, making the brand central to a major public inquiry and safety debate. British manufacturing also contracted substantially. After the closure of several earlier plants, the Yate site closed at the end of 2024, ending Hotpoint appliance production in the United Kingdom. European production is now associated with Italy, Poland and Turkey, while GE Appliances supplies the North American market from facilities including Appliance Park in Louisville.
