Overview
Holba is a Czech brewery and beer brand headquartered in Hanušovice in the foothills of the High Ash Mountains. Its identity is closely tied to the landscape around the brewery: the brand uses mountain imagery in its communication, supports outdoor and sporting activities in the region, and presents its beers under the promise “Pure Beer from the Mountains” (“Ryzí pivo z hor”). Its best-known product is Holba Šerák, a medium-strength lager named after the nearby Šerák mountain. The brewery was established in 1874 by maltster Josef Müllshitzský. In 1906 it became part of the Nordmährische Brauerei und Malzfabriks Aktiengesellschaft in Mährisch Schönberg. During the interwar period, the brewery was described as the third-largest beer producer in Czechoslovakia. Following the communist nationalization of 1948, it lost its independent status and operated as part of the Severomoravské pivovary Přerov national enterprise. Holba Šerák was introduced in 1983 and later became the brewery’s flagship offering. After the Velvet Revolution, the Czech state began transforming and disposing of many nationalized industrial assets. In that process, Holba a.s. was established in the 1990s, and PMS Přerov a.s. became its major owner in 1995. The brewery was acquired by Kofola in 2023, while reference material identifies Pivovary CZ Group a.s. as the major brewing owner associated with the business. Holba’s portfolio includes pale lagers, amber lager, premium beer, non-alcoholic beer, flavored beer mixtures, unfiltered beer, and stronger seasonal or special lagers. Holba Šerák is the central brand in the range, while Holba Classic and Holba Premium serve more conventional pale-lager occasions. Some products are available in bottles and cans, whereas other production is primarily distributed in kegs and barrels. Reported annual production exceeds 350,000 hectoliters. The brewery’s regional positioning extends beyond packaging and advertising. Holba helps maintain hiking trails and sponsors sporting events in the mountain area. It has also participated in the Alois Nebel art project. Its public-facing events include Pivovarská čtvrtka, a recreational sporting event, and Pivovarské slavnosti, a brewery-based music and beer festival. These activities reinforce the brand’s association with local tourism, outdoor recreation, and Moravian brewing heritage.
History
Holba’s history begins in 1874, when maltster Josef Müllshitzský founded the brewery in Hanušovice. Its location in the mountain region of northern Moravia later became central to the brewery’s commercial identity. In 1906, the business joined the Nordmährische Brauerei und Malzfabriks Aktiengesellschaft in Mährisch Schönberg, linking the Hanušovice operation to a larger brewing and malting enterprise. The brewery held an important position in the Czechoslovak brewing industry during the interwar period and was characterized as the country’s third-largest beer producer. Its organizational independence ended after the communist government nationalized the brewing sector in 1948. Holba became a non-independent unit of Severomoravské pivovary Přerov, a state enterprise, and remained within the centrally organized brewing system for several decades. A major product turning point came in 1983 with the introduction of Holba Šerák. Named for the nearby Šerák peak, the beer connected the product directly to its geographical setting and eventually became the brewery’s flagship. The name also helped establish the regional and mountain-focused imagery that continues to distinguish Holba from more nationally standardized beer brands. Following the Velvet Revolution, the Czech Republic began restructuring and privatizing many enterprises that had been nationalized under communist rule. Holba a.s. was created during the economic transformation of the 1990s. In 1995, PMS Přerov a.s. became the major owner, returning the brewery to a corporate structure separate from the former national enterprise system. In the twenty-first century, Holba maintained a portfolio centered on lager while adding non-alcoholic, flavored, unfiltered, and stronger special products. The brewery’s marketing continued to emphasize the High Ash Mountains, using mountain motifs in promotional materials and the slogan “Pure Beer from the Mountains.” It also developed a regional public-relations program involving trail maintenance, sponsorship of mountain sports, the Alois Nebel art project, and recurring brewery events. The brewery’s principal public events are Pivovarská čtvrtka, a recreational sporting event, and Pivovarské slavnosti, a music and beer festival held at the brewery. Reference material reports attendance of approximately 3,238 people at one edition of the sporting event and more than 7,000 at one edition of the festival. These events position Holba not only as a beer producer but also as a participant in local tourism and community life. In 2023, Kofola acquired the brewery. Reference material identifies Pivovary CZ Group a.s. as the major owner associated with Holba and reports annual production of more than 350,000 hectoliters. Holba therefore continues as an active Czech brewery whose distinctiveness rests on its long operating history, mountain provenance, and strong regional presence.
