Overview
Hillhouse Investment Management Ltd., commonly known as Hillhouse Investment, is a global investment firm headquartered in Singapore and founded by Lei Zhang in 2005. The firm began as a public-equities investor after receiving approximately US$20 million in seed capital from the Yale University endowment, arranged through Yale chief investment officer David Swensen. Its early portfolio included Tencent, Baidu and JD.com, investments that helped establish Hillhouse's reputation as a long-term, research-driven investor in Asian technology and consumer businesses. Over time, Hillhouse expanded beyond listed equities into private equity, growth investing, venture capital, healthcare, consumer businesses, industrial and logistics assets, domestic appliances, and real estate-related opportunities. The firm generally presents itself as a long-term investment partner rather than a narrowly specialized buyout house. Its activities have covered businesses at multiple stages of development, from venture-backed companies and growth-stage enterprises to mature public corporations and large take-private transactions. Hillhouse's investment history includes early backing for JD.com, Zoom Video Communications and BeiGene; investments in consumer companies such as Blue Moon, Little Freddie and Miniso; and major acquisitions including Belle International, Global Logistic Properties and Philips' global domestic-appliances business. In 2017, Hillhouse and Hopu Investment Management acquired Global Logistic Properties for approximately US$12 billion, described at the time as the largest buyout of an Asian company. That same period also saw Hillhouse participate in the acquisition and privatization of Belle International for approximately US$6.8 billion. The firm developed a substantial private-equity platform during the 2010s and early 2020s. In 2020, its venture-capital activities were separated into the independent GL Ventures platform. In 2021, Hillhouse completed fundraising for its fifth flagship private-equity fund at approximately US$18 billion, making it one of the largest private-equity funds raised in Asia and exceeding the previous regional record attributed to KKR. In 2022, Hillhouse established its first real-estate-focused vehicle, the Hillhouse Real Asset Opportunities Fund, with reported investment capacity or commitments exceeding US$2 billion. Hillhouse has also pursued operating partnerships and sector platforms. It established a China-focused healthcare joint venture with Mayo Clinic and partnered with Peet's Coffee to develop the Peet's China business, including a Shanghai roastery opened in 2017. Its investment scope has consequently extended from financial ownership into business development, operational improvement and market expansion. The firm maintains offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, New York, London and Abu Dhabi. Public reporting in 2024 described a reduction in Hillhouse's China staff alongside expansion of its Japan team and additional hiring in London and Singapore, suggesting a broader geographic allocation of investment resources. Reported assets under management were estimated at approximately US$100 billion as of 2026, although the firm is privately held and does not provide the same level of standardized public financial disclosure as a listed asset manager.
History
Lei Zhang founded Hillhouse Investment in 2005 in China with seed capital of approximately US$20 million from the Yale University endowment. The investment was arranged during David Swensen's tenure as Yale's chief investment officer. Hillhouse initially concentrated on global public equities, particularly companies benefiting from China's digital, consumer and technological development. Tencent was among its earliest investments, and the firm also became an early investor in Baidu and JD.com. The firm's approach combined fundamental research, long holding periods and willingness to invest across public and private markets. Its early investment in JD.com became especially notable when the company listed on Nasdaq in May 2014. Hillhouse's original investment was reported to have increased substantially in value by the time of the offering. Hillhouse also invested in Blue Moon in 2010, reportedly as the detergent maker's only external institutional investor at that stage. During the 2010s, Hillhouse broadened its scope into growth capital, healthcare and consumer investing. It participated in an early 2015 funding round for Zoom Video Communications and co-led financing for biotechnology company BeiGene in the same year. It also expanded into private-equity acquisitions. In 2017, Hillhouse acquired Belle International for approximately US$6.8 billion and, together with Hopu Investment Management, acquired Global Logistic Properties for approximately US$12 billion. The latter transaction was described as the largest buyout of an Asian company at the time. By 2017, Hillhouse had reportedly participated in more Asia-Pacific private-equity acquisitions than any other private-equity firm, with aggregate transaction value estimated at approximately US$26 billion. Hillhouse's consumer activity continued through investments in organic baby-food and snack producer Little Freddie, a Californian craft brewer and a pet-food brand beginning in 2018. In October 2018, the firm signed a strategic investment agreement with Miniso valued at approximately US$145.6 million. Hillhouse also invested in LifeStyles Healthcare in December 2020, adding exposure to sexual-wellness products. In 2017, it partnered with San Francisco-based Peet's Coffee to establish Peet's Coffee China; the partnership opened its first Shanghai roastery in November of that year. Hillhouse separately formed an exclusive China-focused healthcare joint venture with Mayo Clinic. The firm's platform changed during the early 2020s. In 2020, its venture-capital operation was separated into GL Ventures. Hillhouse then pursued a major expansion of its private-equity fundraising. Reports in 2021 indicated that the firm was preparing to raise approximately US$18 billion across three funds, including buyout, growth-equity and venture strategies. In August 2021, it completed fundraising for its fifth flagship private-equity fund at approximately US$18 billion, a record-sized Asia-focused private-equity fund at that time and larger than the contemporaneous KKR pan-Asia fund cited in reporting. Hillhouse also moved into real assets. In 2022 it launched the Hillhouse Real Asset Opportunities Fund, its first fund focused on real estate and related assets, with reported investments exceeding US$2 billion. The firm had already gained experience in logistics infrastructure through Global Logistic Properties and continued to diversify beyond technology and consumer growth companies. Hillhouse has maintained offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, New York, London and Abu Dhabi. Its investor base has included major university endowments and institutional investors. Stanford University reportedly pledged approximately US$200 million in 2015, while the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board committed approximately US$200 million to Fund II in 2014, US$300 million to Fund III in 2016 and US$300 million to Fund IV in 2018. In 2024, the Wall Street Journal reported staffing reductions in China, expansion of the Japan team and new hiring in London and Singapore. These changes indicated a more geographically diversified operating footprint. Hillhouse remained a private investment firm, with reported assets under management estimated at approximately US$100 billion as of 2026.
