Overview
Helsana is a Swiss insurance group focused primarily on health insurance. Based in Dübendorf, the group provides compulsory basic health insurance under the Swiss Federal Health Insurance Act, supplementary health coverage, accident insurance, and selected insurance products for companies, associations, and other organizations. Its business also includes group daily-allowance insurance and occupational-pension services. The Helsana name was created in 1996 through the merger of Helvetia and Artisana, two established Swiss health and accident insurers. Helvetia supplied the older institutional lineage: it originated as a cooperative health insurer in 1899 and expanded substantially over the twentieth century. By 1971, it had more than one million members and a broad branch network across German-speaking Switzerland, French-speaking Switzerland, and Ticino. Artisana was established in Bern in 1952. It initially concentrated on daily-allowance insurance for the construction sector before developing into a broader health-insurance provider. The merger reflected the consolidation of the Swiss health-insurance industry and was intended to strengthen the combined organizations’ competitive position, broaden their service range, and create a more extensive national presence. Helvetia and Artisana were absorbed into the association structure that forms the shareholder base of Helsana. The resulting group became one of Switzerland’s leading health and accident insurers. Basic insurance is Helsana’s principal business area and historically has represented the largest share of group premium income. Supplementary insurance is the second major activity, allowing customers to obtain coverage beyond the compulsory statutory package. The group also serves business and institutional customers through accident and daily-allowance products, while occupational pensions extend its role into employee benefits. Helsana has progressively simplified its legal-entity and brand structure. Aerosana was merged into Progrès in 2011. In 2017, Avanex was merged with Helsana and Sansan Insurance Company Ltd. was merged with Progrès Insurance Company Ltd.; both Avanex and Sansan consequently disappeared from the market as separate basic-insurance entities. In 2022, Progrès was integrated into Helsana Insurance Company Ltd., further concentrating basic-insurance operations under the Helsana entity. The group operates through a Swiss distribution network comprising general agencies and sales offices. Its positioning combines broad national health-insurance coverage with supplementary products, accident protection, and services for employers. Helsana is therefore best understood not as a single insurance product but as a multi-line Swiss health-insurance group whose identity is rooted in the combination of two historical insurers and whose current operations are concentrated in the Swiss market.
History
Helsana was established in 1996 through the merger of Helvetia and Artisana, two Swiss insurers with roots in different periods of the country’s health-insurance development. Helvetia was founded as a cooperative health-insurance organization in 1899. It expanded during the twentieth century and developed a wide geographic presence. The organization opened its first branch in French-speaking Switzerland in Fribourg in 1903 and its first branch in Ticino in Bellinzona in 1906. By 1971, Helvetia had more than one million members and operated more than 1,200 branches across Switzerland’s principal linguistic regions. Artisana was founded in Bern in 1952. Its early business was concentrated on daily-allowance insurance for the construction industry. Over time, it broadened its activities and became a more comprehensive health insurer. The two organizations therefore brought complementary histories to the 1996 combination: Helvetia had a long cooperative tradition and extensive membership base, while Artisana had developed specialist experience in income-replacement and broader health-insurance products. The merger took place during a period of substantial consolidation in Swiss health insurance. The number of health-insurance companies had fallen markedly between the middle and end of the twentieth century. Against that background, the Helvetia and Artisana delegates approved the creation of Helsana as a way to strengthen market position, consolidate resources, and provide a wider range of insurance services. The two predecessors were absorbed into an association structure that became the shareholder base of Helsana. Fondation Sana holds the majority shareholding, while Fondation Artisana retains a minority interest. Following its formation, Helsana developed as a multi-line insurance group. Its main activity became compulsory basic health insurance under Swiss federal legislation. The group also built a substantial supplementary-insurance business, offering protection beyond the statutory package. Additional activities included accident insurance, group daily-allowance insurance for employers and associations, and occupational-pension services. Helsana subsequently reorganized several of its legal entities. In 2011, Aerosana was merged into Progrès. In 2017, Avanex was merged with Helsana, while Sansan Insurance Company Ltd. was merged with Progrès Insurance Company Ltd. These transactions removed both Avanex and Sansan from the market as separate entities. In 2022, Progrès was integrated into Helsana Insurance Company Ltd., bringing another part of the group’s basic-insurance activity under the principal Helsana entity. The contemporary Helsana Group is a Switzerland-focused insurer with a national agency and sales-office network. Its identity is based on the combination of compulsory health coverage, supplementary insurance, accident protection, and selected employer and institutional products. The group remains active and is described as one of Switzerland’s leading health and accident insurers.
