Overview

Heineken Malaysia Berhad is a Malaysian brewing and beverage company with roots dating to the incorporation of Guinness Malaysia Limited in 1964. It operates the Sungei Way Brewery in Selangor, which began production in 1965, and has developed into one of Malaysia's major producers and marketers of beer, stout, cider and non-alcoholic malt beverages. Its portfolio includes Heineken, Tiger Beer, Tiger Crystal, Guinness, Strongbow Apple Ciders, Apple Fox Cider, Anchor Smooth, Kilkenny, Anglia and Malta. The company also imports or distributes selected international products, including Heineken 0.0, Paulaner and Kirin Ichiban. The business was reshaped in 1989 when Guinness Malaysia Berhad merged with Malayan Breweries (Malaya) Sdn Bhd, creating Guinness Anchor Berhad, commonly known as GAB. The combination brought together the Guinness and Anchor businesses in Malaysia and established the corporate structure that preceded the company's current identity. In 2015, Heineken N.V. acquired Diageo's remaining interest in GAPL Pte Ltd. Through GAPL, Heineken obtained control of 51 percent of Heineken Malaysia's equity. The Malaysian company changed its name from Guinness Anchor Berhad to Heineken Malaysia Berhad in April 2016, aligning its corporate identity with the international HEINEKEN group. Heineken Malaysia serves a broad range of occasions and price positions within Malaysia's regulated alcoholic-beverage market. Heineken is positioned as a flagship international pale lager, while Tiger and Anchor provide locally established lager propositions. Guinness adds a heritage stout offering; Strongbow and Apple Fox extend the portfolio into cider; and products such as Heineken 0.0, Malta and Anglia address non-alcoholic or low-alcohol occasions. Imported brands such as Paulaner and Kirin Ichiban add German wheat-beer and Japanese premium-lager credentials. The company combines local brewing, brand marketing, commercial distribution and corporate responsibility activities. Its sustainability framework is associated with HEINEKEN's Brewing a Better World agenda and covers areas across the value chain, from barley to bar. Through the SPARK Foundation, established in 2007, it has supported community and environmental initiatives including the W.A.T.E.R. project and education-related programmes. It also promotes responsible consumption through its Drink Sensibly platform. Heineken Malaysia is listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia and remains an operating Malaysian subsidiary within the HEINEKEN group.

History

Heineken Malaysia's corporate history begins with Guinness Malaysia Limited, incorporated on 24 January 1964. The company established operations at the Sungei Way Brewery in Selangor, which commenced production in 1965. The brewery occupies a site of approximately 23.72 acres and became the foundation for local production of Guinness and other brewing brands. On 15 April 1966, the company adopted the name Guinness Malaysia Berhad. A major structural change took place in 1989, when Guinness Malaysia Berhad merged with Malayan Breweries (Malaya) Sdn Bhd. The combination created Guinness Anchor Berhad, or GAB. GAPL Pte Ltd became the holding company, while Malayan Breweries (Malaya) was retained as a dormant wholly owned subsidiary. The new organization brought together the Guinness and Anchor businesses and provided the platform for a larger Malaysian brewing operation. The ownership structure changed again in 2015. On 7 October that year, the company announced that Heineken N.V. had acquired the remaining shares in GAPL Pte Ltd previously held by Diageo Plc. The transaction gave Heineken N.V. complete ownership of GAPL. Because GAPL held 51 percent of Heineken Malaysia, Heineken thereby controlled a majority stake in the Malaysian listed company. On 15 March 2016, GAB announced that it would change its name to Heineken Malaysia Berhad. The change became effective on 21 April 2016 and made the company's legal and public identity consistent with the HEINEKEN group. The business continued to operate as a Malaysian listed brewer while using the resources, brand portfolio and international connections of its parent group. Over time, Heineken Malaysia expanded beyond its historic Guinness and Anchor base. Its portfolio came to include Heineken and Tiger lagers, Tiger Crystal, Guinness stout, Strongbow and Apple Fox cider, Kilkenny ale, Anglia shandy and Malta malt beverage. It also imported or distributed products such as Heineken 0.0, Paulaner and Kirin Ichiban. The company therefore combines local brewing with the marketing and distribution of international brands. The company has also developed corporate responsibility programmes around responsible consumption, environmental stewardship and community development. Its SPARK Foundation, established in 2007, serves as a vehicle for selected social and environmental programmes, including the W.A.T.E.R. project and education initiatives. At group level, these activities are connected with HEINEKEN's Brewing a Better World framework and its value-chain approach from barley to bar. Heineken Malaysia remains active in Malaysia and is traded on Bursa Malaysia under the HEIM ticker.
