Hadfields Limited was a major British steelmaking and engineering company based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Its origins lay in the steel-casting business established by Robert Hadfield in 1869 near the River Don at Attercliffe. The company became particularly associated with specialist steels and heavy castings, including manganese steel, armour plate, projectiles, railway components, and engineering products. Its industrial identity was built around the ability to cast large, high-strength components for demanding applications rather than around the production of ordinary commodity steel alone. The company’s most important technological association was with Robert Abbott Hadfield, Robert Hadfield’s son. In 1882 he discovered manganese steel, an alloy that became commercially important because it combined relatively low initial hardness with exceptional toughness and strong work-hardening characteristics. The material became widely known as Hadfield steel. It was especially useful in equipment exposed to severe abrasion and impact, including dredging machinery, crusher components, railway points and crossings, tramway infrastructure, pins, bushes, and bucket lips. Robert Abbott Hadfield also contributed to the development of silicon steel and helped turn the family business into a prominent specialist metallurgical enterprise. Robert Hadfield’s early commercial success came partly from producing steel castings and shell components that had previously been imported from France. By the time of his death in 1888, the business was reported to have supplied very large numbers of cast-steel wheels and axles for use internationally and had developed the capacity to make exceptionally heavy castings. In accordance with his will, the enterprise was reorganised as a limited-liability company in 1888, with shares offered to the public. Robert Abbott Hadfield became its managing director and later chairman. Expansion followed in the 1890s. The original Hecla Works site had become too restricted, so the company acquired a substantial tract of land at Tinsley and opened the East Hecla Works in 1897. The older works were increasingly associated with projectile production, while the expanded facilities supported specialist steelmaking, foundry operations, forging, and heavy engineering. Before and during the First World War, Hadfields was deeply involved in the armaments industry. It produced shells, armour-related steels, and armour-piercing projectiles, while also supplying steel for naval structures and other military applications. After the First World War the company operated on a very large industrial estate in and around Sheffield. Its product range included steel castings and forgings, manganese and other alloy steels, automobile and aircraft steels, projectiles, crushing machinery, tramway track equipment, railway products, and other engineered components. Its production system combined open-hearth, crucible, and electric furnaces with extensive forging, lifting, transport, and heat-treatment infrastructure. Hadfields also entered shareholding arrangements with engineering and automobile-related businesses during the post-war industrial expansion. The company faced the structural problems affecting British steel and heavy engineering in the post-war period. During the 1960s, Sheffield’s steel-foundry sector was considered to require rationalisation. Hadfields reorganised its operations into divisions and participated in discussions concerning the consolidation of local foundry interests. A proposed broader combination did not proceed, but Hadfields’ foundry interests were eventually linked with Samuel Osborn. In 1967 Dunford & Elliott made a successful bid for Hadfields, and the business joined that group as Dunford Hadfields Limited, bringing substantial losses into the enlarged organisation. History
Robert Hadfield established his own steel-casting business in 1869 on a site near the River Don, off Newhall Road in Attercliffe, Sheffield. He came from a family connected with Sheffield steelmaking and cutlery and had previously served an apprenticeship with John Sorby & Sons. The new enterprise benefited from its ability to produce castings and shell materials that British customers had previously obtained from France. Its early product range included wheels, axles, cylinders, railway and tramway equipment, mining and engineering components, and steel shells. The company’s capabilities expanded rapidly. By Robert Hadfield’s death in 1888, the business was reported to have produced more than 1.5 million cast-steel wheels and axles in service around the world and to have made castings weighing up to approximately seven tons. His son, Robert Abbott Hadfield, succeeded him and became the central metallurgical figure in the company’s development. In 1882 Robert Abbott Hadfield had discovered manganese steel, an alloy distinguished by its toughness and ability to harden under working conditions. Commercialised as Era manganese steel, it became important in applications involving impact and abrasion, such as dredgers, crushers, railway points, tramway crossings, pins, bushes, and bucket components. He also developed silicon steel. In accordance with Robert Hadfield’s will, the business was incorporated as a limited-liability company in 1888 and shares were made available to the public. The company expanded beyond its original works during the 1890s, purchasing about 90 acres at Tinsley. East Hecla Works opened there in 1897, while the original Hecla Works was adapted for projectile manufacture. By the early twentieth century Hadfields had become one of Sheffield’s largest industrial employers and was heavily engaged in war production. Its output included shells, armour plate steel, armour-related castings, and large armour-piercing projectiles, as well as alloy steels for civilian engineering. Following the First World War, the company controlled roughly 220 acres of freehold land in and around Sheffield, with around 45 acres occupied by works. It manufactured castings and forgings in manganese and other alloy steels, steels for motor vehicles and aircraft, crushing machinery, tramway equipment, railway products, and military materials. Its industrial plant included open-hearth, crucible, and electric furnaces, heavy forging presses, numerous cranes, internal railways, locomotives, and extensive heating facilities. In 1919 and 1920 it entered reciprocal shareholding arrangements with Harper Bean Limited and similar arrangements with other engineering businesses. The post-war contraction of British heavy industry eventually undermined the company. In the 1960s, rationalisation was pursued across Sheffield’s steel-foundry sector. Hadfields divided its operations into forging, casting, and other divisions and took part in negotiations intended to create a larger consolidated foundry. The wider plan failed, although an association between Hadfields and Samuel Osborn developed. Dunford & Elliott then made a successful bid for Hadfields in 1967. From December that year the company operated within the Dunford & Elliott group as Dunford Hadfields Limited, carrying significant losses. In 1977 the business again used the Hadfields name and entered Lonrho, the conglomerate led by Tiny Rowland. British steel-industry overcapacity led to further plant closures and employment reductions. The Leeds Road works closed in June 1981, eliminating about 1,800 jobs, and the East Hecla workforce was reduced. Lonrho closed the remaining operations in 1983, with compensation involving GKN and the British Steel Corporation. The principal works were demolished during the redevelopment of Sheffield’s eastern industrial area. Most of the former site is now occupied by Meadowhall Shopping Centre.
