Overview
GXO Logistics is a United States-based multinational contract logistics company headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut. It manages outsourced supply-chain activities for retailers, manufacturers, technology companies, consumer brands, and other organizations. Its work typically includes warehousing, distribution, order fulfillment, inventory management, transport coordination, returns processing, product repair, and other forms of reverse logistics. Rather than primarily selling transportation capacity under its own consumer-facing brand, GXO operates behind the brands of its customers, integrating people, facilities, software, and automation into their supply chains. The company was created through the separation of XPO, Inc.'s global contract logistics business. XPO announced the planned spin-off in December 2020 and disclosed the GXO name in March 2021. The transaction was completed on August 2, 2021. At separation, Brad Jacobs became non-executive chairman, Malcolm Wilson became chief executive officer, and Baris Oran became chief financial officer. The new company inherited a substantial international logistics platform, including hundreds of warehouses and operations across Europe and North America. GXO's business is closely associated with the growth of e-commerce and the increasing complexity of modern retail supply chains. Its services support both forward logistics, in which goods move from suppliers toward stores or consumers, and reverse logistics, in which products are returned from consumers to retailers or manufacturers. Reverse logistics may include inspection, refurbishment, repair, repackaging, resale, recycling, or disposal. This capability is particularly relevant to apparel, consumer electronics, retail, and other sectors with high return volumes. The company's expansion after its separation from XPO has combined acquisitions, customer partnerships, new facilities, and technology deployment. In 2022, GXO agreed to acquire Clipper Logistics, a United Kingdom-based retail logistics provider with expertise in retail distribution, life sciences, reverse logistics, and repairs. The transaction closed in October 2022 after regulatory approval and added operations in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland, along with more than 50 sites, approximately 10 million square feet of warehouse space, and about 10,000 employees. GXO also expanded its shared-warehouse offering in the United Kingdom during the same period. GXO has continued to build sector-specific and regional relationships. It announced a partnership with Sainsbury in 2023 to manage fresh and frozen shipments at several warehouse locations and agreed with Zalando to develop an automated fulfillment center near Paris. It also announced a multiyear expansion program in Germany. In North America, the acquisition of PFSweb in October 2023 strengthened GXO's technology-enabled e-commerce fulfillment capabilities. In 2024, GXO pursued and completed the takeover of Wincanton, a major United Kingdom supply-chain company, after the offer received board backing and court approval. Automation is a central part of GXO's operating model. Technologies deployed at customer sites have included collaborative robots, vision-scanning systems, automated guided vehicles, and goods-to-person robotic systems. GXO Direct, the company's shared-warehouse service, allows multiple customers to use common facilities instead of contracting for an entire warehouse. The service originated in 2018, initially operated in the United States and Canada, and was expanded in the United Kingdom in 2023. GXO also works with warehouse-software providers, including Blue Yonder, to support inventory and fulfillment operations. By 2023, the company reported approximately 1,000 warehouses and described itself as the world's largest contract logistics provider. Its network serves more than 30 countries and supports customers across retail, e-commerce, consumer products, technology, healthcare…
History
GXO Logistics emerged from the restructuring of XPO, Inc.'s logistics portfolio. In December 2020, XPO announced that it intended to separate its global contract logistics segment into an independent company. The planned separation reflected the different operating characteristics of contract logistics compared with transportation businesses: contract logistics depends on long-term customer relationships, warehouse operations, fulfillment processes, supply-chain integration, and increasingly sophisticated automation. In March 2021, XPO announced that the new company would be called GXO Logistics, Inc. The spin-off was completed on August 2, 2021. Brad Jacobs became non-executive chairman, Malcolm Wilson became chief executive officer, and Baris Oran became chief financial officer. Wilson had previously led XPO's European division. The newly independent company began with a broad international operating footprint, including approximately 94,000 employees and 869 warehouses with more than 208 million square feet of facility space across 27 countries, according to the company's early post-separation profile. GXO's initial strategy centered on expanding outsourced logistics in sectors where customers needed scale, specialized handling, and flexible fulfillment capacity. Retail and e-commerce were particularly important because online sales require distributed inventory, rapid order processing, peak-season capacity, and efficient handling of returns. GXO also developed capabilities in repairs, refurbishment, life-sciences logistics, and other specialized operations. Its reverse-logistics work moves products from consumers back to retailers or manufacturers and may involve inspection, repair, repackaging, resale, or other disposition processes. A major early expansion came through the acquisition of Clipper Logistics. Announced in May 2022 and completed in October after final regulatory approval, the transaction added a United Kingdom-based retail logistics business serving customers including Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, and Virgin Media O2. Clipper contributed expertise in retail distribution, life sciences, reverse logistics, and repair services. The acquisition expanded GXO's presence in Germany and Poland and added more than 50 sites, approximately 10 million square feet of warehouse space, and roughly 10,000 employees. GXO also opened shared warehouse facilities in the United Kingdom during 2022. By October of that year, the company stated that it had opened 90 sites, signed 450 new customer contracts, and hired 15,000 people. The company continued its European development in 2023. GXO announced an arrangement with Sainsbury to manage fresh and frozen shipments at several warehouse sites. It also entered a multiyear partnership with Zalando for a new automated fulfillment center in Montereau-sur-le-Jard near Paris, France, and announced a multiyear expansion program in Germany. By June 2023, GXO reported approximately 1,000 warehouses. Its growth model combined organic site openings, customer-specific facilities, shared infrastructure, and acquisitions. Technology has been a defining element of GXO's operating model. By the end of 2022, approximately 7,600 pieces of technology were operating at customer sites. These included collaborative robots, vision scanners, automated guided vehicles, and goods-to-person robots. In July 2023, GXO appointed Adrian Stoch to the newly created position of chief automation officer. The role underscored the company's effort to make automation a core part of productivity, accuracy, labor support, and fulfillment capacity. GXO Direct, introduced in 2018, applies a shared-warehouse model in which several customers use one facility. The service initially operated in the United States and Canada and was expanded in the United Kingdom in March 2023. GXO Direct also identified Blue Yonder as a warehouse-software partner in 2023. M&A remained central to GXO's expansion. In October 2023, the company acquired PFSweb, a United States-based technology-enabled e-commerce fulfillment platform, strengthening its North American offering. In 2024, GXO pursued the acquisition of Wincanton, a United Kingdom supply-chain company. Wincanton's board supported the offer, reported at £762 million, and court approval on April 25, 2024 allowed the transaction to be completed. GXO's later operating profile was that of a large international contract logistics provider serving more than 30 countries and approximately 1,000 warehouses. The company describes its market position as the world's largest contract logistics provider. Its history since independence has been characterized by the separation from XPO, rapid European and North American expansion, increased investment in automation, and a broadening of capabilities in e-commerce, retail, returns, repair, and shared warehousing.

The model supports customers that need high throughput, flexible capacity, and integration between digital order systems and physical warehouse activity.

Reverse logistics
Reverse logistics manages the movement of goods from consumers or downstream locations back to retailers, manufacturers, or other supply-chain nodes. GXO's capabilities include returns processing, inspection, repair, refurbishment, repackaging, resale preparation, and disposition. This offering is particularly relevant to apparel, consumer electronics, retail, and other categories where returned products must be handled quickly and economically.
