Overview
Grupo Cisneros is a privately held, family-owned conglomerate founded in Venezuela in 1929. Although its historical roots are Venezuelan, the group is headquartered in Coral Gables, Florida, and has developed a business model focused on Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking audiences across the Americas and Europe. Its activities have included television broadcasting, entertainment production and distribution, digital advertising, e-commerce, real estate, tourism development, consumer products, travel services and telecommunications. The business began as D. Cisneros & Cia., a transport company established by brothers Diego Cisneros and Antonio José Cisneros. The founders moved from truck transportation into bus operations after obtaining a route license, eventually building and selling a bus fleet. During the late 1930s and 1940s, the company diversified into distribution and manufacturing. It represented brands including Norge, Hamilton Watch Company, REO and Studebaker in Venezuela, and acquired the Venezuelan Pepsi-Cola bottling and manufacturing concession in 1940. The beverage business became a major foundation of the family's wealth. Other early ventures included Liquid Carbonic, which produced carbon dioxide and beverage-related products, and Helados Tio Rico, an ice-cream company founded in 1952. In 1953, the family's commercial and industrial interests were consolidated under the Cisneros Group of Companies. Media became the group's defining business in the following decade. After TeleVisa, Venezuela's privately owned television station, encountered financial difficulties, the Cisneros organization acquired the operation and relaunched it as Venevisión in 1961. Venevisión grew into Venezuela's largest television network and became the core of an international Spanish-language media platform encompassing production, distribution, music and pay television. Leadership passed to the next generation after Diego Cisneros suffered a stroke in 1970. Ricardo José Cisneros became chief operating officer in February of that year, while Gustavo Cisneros became chairman and chief executive officer in March. Under Gustavo's leadership, the group pursued international expansion and partnerships. In 1992, Grupo Cisneros joined Jerry Perenchio and Emilio Azcárraga Milmo in acquiring Univision. Its minority interest connected Venevisión's programming with the leading United States Spanish-language television network and later supported co-production and distribution relationships. The consortium sold Univision in 2007. The group also entered Latin American satellite television through a 1995 partnership with Hughes Electronics, helping establish a regional direct-to-home television venture that became associated with DirecTV Latin America and later Vrio. Its media operations expanded through Venevisión International, subsequently renamed Cisneros Media Distribution, and through Venevisión Productions and Venevisión Studios. These businesses have distributed and produced Spanish-language programming for audiences in numerous countries. Alongside traditional media, Grupo Cisneros developed Cisneros Interactive, a division aimed at digital advertising and online commerce. Its portfolio has included RedMas, Adsmovil and Cuponidad. In 2016, Cisneros Interactive partnered with Facebook in Latin America to serve as an exclusive reseller in selected markets. The group has also maintained real-estate and tourism interests, including Tropicalia, a planned sustainable resort development in the Dominican Republic, as well as consumer, travel and telecommunications businesses. In August 2013, Gustavo Cisneros appointed his daughter Adriana Cisneros de Griffin as chief executive officer. She had previously worked in the group's strategy function. Under her leadership, the organization has continued to present itself as a diversified company serving Hispanic and broader Latin American markets, with media and digital businesses at the center of its…
History
Grupo Cisneros traces its origins to 1929, when brothers Diego Cisneros and Antonio José Cisneros established D. Cisneros & Cia. in Venezuela. The company initially transported materials by truck, but a license to operate a bus route led the brothers to convert the business into a passenger-transport operation. By 1939, they had built a substantial bus line and sold it, freeing capital for further diversification. That same year, D. Cisneros & Cia. became the Venezuelan exclusive representative for several foreign brands, including Norge, Hamilton Watch Company and REO Truck. In 1940, the company obtained the exclusive license to manufacture and bottle Pepsi-Cola products in Venezuela. This concession became a central source of growth and helped finance later expansion. The group added Liquid Carbonic in 1944, producing carbon dioxide and related beverage products, and represented Studebaker beginning in 1947. In 1952, it founded an ice-cream company that was later renamed Helados Tio Rico and became a leading Venezuelan producer. In 1953, the family's business interests were reorganized under the name Cisneros Group of Companies. The group continued to expand beyond distribution and consumer products. In 1968, it founded Gaveplast, a manufacturer of plastic crates and cases used by retail and beverage businesses in South America. Television became the group's most consequential strategic move. TeleVisa, also known as Televisión Venezolana Independiente, had been Venezuela's only privately owned television channel but fell into bankruptcy following the country's political and economic upheaval in the late 1950s. After the Venezuelan government encouraged the Cisneros organization to purchase the station, the group acquired it and relaunched the channel as Venevisión in 1961. Venevisión subsequently developed into Venezuela's largest television network and the anchor of the group's media division. A succession transition began in 1970 after Diego Cisneros suffered a stroke. Ricardo José Cisneros became chief operating officer in February, and Gustavo Cisneros became chairman and chief executive officer in March. Gustavo's tenure was marked by a shift from a primarily Venezuelan commercial conglomerate toward a multinational group centered on media, entertainment and Spanish-language audiences. The business used partnerships, minority investments and joint ventures to expand rather than relying only on wholly owned subsidiaries. In 1992, Grupo Cisneros joined American businessman Jerry Perenchio and Mexican entrepreneur Emilio Azcárraga Milmo in purchasing Univision. Grupo Cisneros held a minority position, and the relationship enabled Venevisión programming to reach United States Hispanic audiences. It also supported later production and distribution cooperation between Venevisión International and Univision Communications. The consortium ultimately sold Univision in 2007. The group entered regional satellite television in 1995 through a partnership with Hughes Electronics. The resulting direct-to-home service operated across Latin America and became associated with DirecTV Latin America and the later Vrio structure. In parallel, the group internationalized its content operations. Venevisión International, later known as Cisneros Media Distribution, handled the marketing and distribution of programming produced by the group and by third parties. Venevisión Productions and Venevisión Studios extended the production infrastructure, while VeneMusic and Siente Music broadened the group's entertainment and music interests. The portfolio later expanded into digital businesses through Cisneros Interactive. RedMas focused on mobile advertising and development, Adsmovil on Hispanic mobile advertising in the United States and Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Latin America, and Cuponidad on online daily deals in selected markets. A 2016 partnership made Cisneros Interactive an exclusive Facebook reseller in several Latin American countries. The group also maintained real-estate and tourism activities, including Tropicalia, a planned sustainable resort development in the Dominican Republic, and retained interests in travel, cosmetics, telecommunications and other consumer services. In 2011, the group established joint ventures with Chinese partners, although the available reference does not specify the individual ventures. In August 2013, Adriana Cisneros de Griffin succeeded her father as chief executive officer after previously serving in strategy. The modern group is headquartered in Coral Gables, Florida, while continuing to derive much of its identity from Venezuelan origins and from its reach among Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking audiences. Its media operations include free-to-air and subscription television, content production, distribution, music and entertainment properties, while its broader portfolio spans digital advertising, e-commerce, real estate, tourism and consumer services.
