Overview

GEODIS is a French multinational transport and logistics group headquartered in Levallois-Perret, in the Greater Paris area. The company operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of the SNCF Group through SNCF Participations and serves industrial, retail, healthcare, technology, automotive, energy, aerospace, chemical, and e-commerce customers. Its operating model combines international freight forwarding, contract logistics, distribution and express delivery, European road transport, and supply-chain optimization, allowing it to manage multiple stages of a customer’s supply chain rather than focusing on a single transport mode. The group traces its origins to Transports Rapides Calberson, founded in Le Havre in 1904 and renamed Société des Transports Routiers Calberson in 1920. The modern GEODIS Group was created on December 20, 1995, when Compagnie Générale Calberson absorbed Bourgey Montreuil, SCETA Transport, and SCETA International. The new group was reorganized and privatized in 1996. After a period as a listed and partly state-owned enterprise, GEODIS returned under full SNCF control following SNCF’s takeover completed in 2008. GEODIS expanded from a French road-transport heritage into a global logistics platform through acquisitions and organizational changes. Important steps included the purchase of TNT’s freight-forwarding activities in 2006, the acquisition of IBM Global Logistics in 2008, and the purchase of Ozburn-Hessey Logistics, later known as OHL, in the United States in 2015. The IBM transaction created a fifth activity centered on supply-chain optimization and logistics-flow management, while OHL significantly broadened GEODIS’s North American contract-logistics and freight-forwarding capabilities. In 2015, the group also unified its portfolio under the GEODIS brand. The company’s current business is organized around four principal lines of business: Global Freight Forwarding, Global Contract Logistics, Distribution & Express, and the European Road Network. Freight forwarding covers international air, sea, road, and rail transportation, customs services, project cargo, and out-of-gauge shipments. Contract logistics includes warehousing, fulfillment, inventory management, distribution-center operations, production-line supply, reverse logistics, and omnichannel e-commerce services. Distribution and express activities cover parcel, business delivery, final-mile, time-definite, and premium delivery solutions. The European Road Network provides full-load and part-load transport, palletized freight, and sector-specific road logistics across Europe. Supply-chain optimization remains an important consulting and technology capability embedded across these activities. GEODIS has continued to use acquisitions to build an integrated international network. It acquired Pekaes in Poland in 2021, strengthening palletized freight, intermodal connectivity, and Central European coverage. In 2022, it completed the acquisition of Singapore-based Keppel Logistics, expanding contract logistics and e-commerce fulfillment in Asia-Pacific, and acquired U.S. express and final-mile provider Need It Now Delivers. In 2023, it completed the acquisition of German company trans-o-flex, adding temperature-controlled pharmaceutical distribution and premium express capabilities. These transactions reinforced GEODIS’s ability to combine global freight, warehousing, domestic distribution, and final-mile delivery. As reported for 2024, GEODIS generated €11.3 billion in revenue, employed approximately 49,720 people, served 166 countries through a network of more than 1,000 sites, and operated approximately 11 million square meters of warehouse space. Its customer base included roughly 91,000 active customers. Revenue was distributed across global freight forwarding, global contract logistics, distribution and express, the European Road Network, and other activities. History

GEODIS developed from the French road-transport company Transports Rapides Calberson, founded in Le Havre in 1904. The business was renamed Société des Transports Routiers Calberson in 1920. In 1961, SCETA took control of the Calberson business, bringing it into the wider group of non-rail freight and logistics activities associated with the French railway system. The decisive corporate reorganization came on December 20, 1995, when Compagnie Générale Calberson absorbed Bourgey Montreuil, SCETA Transport, and SCETA International. The combined group adopted the name GEODIS. In 1996, the group was privatized by decree and reorganized into four main divisions: logistics, overseas activities, parcel delivery, and road haulage. This structure marked the transition from a historically French road carrier into a broader transport and logistics group. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, GEODIS expanded through selected acquisitions and partnerships. The group added specialized industrial and international capabilities, developed its parcel and road operations, and expanded its freight-forwarding network. In 2006, GEODIS acquired TNT’s freight-forwarding division, strengthening its position in international freight management. The acquisition also helped establish a larger platform for air and sea freight, customs, and multimodal coordination. In 2008, SNCF launched an offer to acquire the shares of GEODIS that it did not already own. GEODIS subsequently became part of SNCF’s new transport and logistics division. That year, it acquired IBM Global Logistics, IBM’s global logistics-management platform, while entering into a long-term services relationship with IBM. The transaction created the group’s Supply Chain Optimization activity, adding supply-chain design, control-tower, process-management, and logistics-flow capabilities to the conventional transport and warehousing businesses. GEODIS continued to broaden its geographic and sector reach during the following decade. It acquired parts of Giraud International in 2009, including activities connected with iron and steel and Central and Eastern Europe. In 2012, Marie-Christine Lombard, formerly chief executive of TNT Express, became GEODIS chief executive officer. She later became chair of the executive board. Her tenure has been associated with international expansion, service integration, operational transformation, digital development, and the use of acquisitions to build a more comprehensive logistics network. A major milestone occurred in 2015, when GEODIS acquired U.S. logistics company Ozburn-Hessey Logistics, commonly known as OHL. The transaction strengthened GEODIS’s presence in American contract logistics, freight forwarding, warehousing, distribution, and supply-chain management. GEODIS also brought its business portfolio under a single group brand, improving consistency across regions and lines of business. The group’s organization was further shaped by changes within SNCF. From 2008 to 2020, GEODIS was one of the main subsidiaries of SNCF Logistics, which brought together SNCF’s road and rail freight and logistics activities. In 2020, SNCF Logistics was separated into GEODIS Group, Ermewa, and Rail Logistics Europe. GEODIS remained a wholly owned SNCF subsidiary while operating as an international logistics company with its own management and business lines. In Central Europe, GEODIS completed the acquisition of Polish logistics company Pekaes in 2020. Pekaes contributed a palletized and intermodal freight network, local branches, rail terminals, and logistics warehouses, increasing GEODIS’s connection between Poland, Germany, and Western Europe. GEODIS also strengthened selected French capabilities through the acquisition of Transports Gandon and Transports Perrier in 2021, adding temperature-controlled and pallet-transport expertise. In 2021, GEODIS responded to air-freight capacity constraints during the COVID-19 period by leasing an Airbus A330-300 converted freighter for its GEODIS Air Network. The aircraft was operated by Titan Airways and connected European, North American, and Asian freight hubs. The initiative illustrated the group’s willingness to secure capacity and create dedicated transport solutions when conventional market capacity was disrupted. The 2022–2023 period brought another wave of strategic acquisitions. In 2022, GEODIS acquired Keppel Logistics in Singapore, expanding contract logistics, warehousing, e-commerce fulfillment, inventory visibility, and omnichannel capabilities in Asia-Pacific. It also acquired U.S. express and final-mile provider Need It Now Delivers, strengthening domestic freight distribution, white-glove delivery, direct-to-consumer services, and U.S. contract logistics. In 2023, GEODIS completed the acquisition of trans-o-flex in Germany. The transaction added a temperature-controlled pharmaceutical network and premium express delivery capability, particularly relevant to healthcare and time-critical distribution. Alongside external growth, GEODIS has pursued a more explicit brand and sustainability strategy. At the end of 2019, it introduced the global “Keep Rising” brand narrative and campaign, replacing a more descriptive positioning with a message centered on resilience, customer growth, entrepreneurial determination, and overcoming logistical constraints. The campaign was designed to speak to employees and customers and to frame GEODIS as a growth partner rather than simply a transport provider. GEODIS’s current strategy is organized under Ambition 2027. The plan emphasizes customized end-to-end logistics, profitable growth, operational excellence, digital innovation, external growth, and sustainable and ethical logistics. The group’s 2024 reporting described a business with €11.3 billion in revenue, approximately 49,720 employees, operations in 166 countries, more than 1,000 sites, about 11 million square meters of warehouse space, and approximately 91,000 active customers. Its four principal lines of business are Global Freight Forwarding, Global Contract Logistics, Distribution & Express, and the European Road Network. Sustainability has become increasingly integrated into GEODIS’s governance and investment decisions. The group’s targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative in 2025 include a 42% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030 from a 2022 baseline, together with reductions in selected outsourced transport and Scope 3 emissions. GEODIS has also reported alternative-fuel and electric-vehicle deployment, low-carbon transport options, site energy-efficiency programs, sustainable aviation and marine fuels, and digital tools for routing and load optimization. By 2026, the company reported receiving a CDP Climate A score, reinforcing its public sustainability positioning.
