History

Gaylord Hotels' legacy narrative begins with radio and live entertainment. In 1925, WKY Radio began broadcasting the "WSM Barn Dance" in Nashville, Tennessee, later renamed the Grand Ole Opry show, which the brand describes as the iconic namesake for its first hotel. In 1977, the Opryland Hotel opened with 578 guest rooms, marking the beginning of the brand's hospitality journey. In 1983, the Opryland Hotel unveiled the Garden Conservatory, increasing the room count to 1,064 and introducing 37 new meeting rooms along with 18,500 sq. ft. of pre-function space. Also in 1983, the Oklahoma Publishing Company, led by brand namesake Edward L. Gaylord, acquired the Grand Ole Opry, WSM Radio, and Opryland Hotel, laying the foundation for a future hospitality brand. In 1988, the Opryland Hotel debuted the Cascades Atrium, expanding the resort to 1,891 guest rooms and adding 6 meeting rooms, 40,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space, a grand ballroom, and 12 retail shops. In 1991, Gaylord Entertainment Company (GET) was established as an independent, publicly traded company.
