Overview

Gameloft Montreal is a studio established by Gameloft in Montreal, Canada, involved in developing several well-known Gameloft titles, such as the Asphalt series.

History

Gameloft announced its Montreal interactive-content center on 12 June 2000. The initiative was designed to build a Canadian development base, particularly for online games, and benefited from Quebec public support through employment-related tax credits. The first known Montreal production was Gulo's Tale, released in 2003 for J2ME mobile phones. The title reflected the studio's early emphasis on downloadable games for feature phones and helped establish its reputation for original mobile software. The studio's first major franchise breakthrough came with Asphalt: Urban GT in 2004. The three-dimensional racing game featured real-world-inspired circuits and licensed vehicles, giving mobile players a console-like racing experience. Gameloft Montreal followed it with Asphalt: Urban GT 2 in 2005, adding more vehicles, tracks, modes, traffic, and the takedown mechanic that became associated with the series. The studio broadened its portfolio with games such as New York Nights: Success in the City, Naval Battle: Mission Commander, Bubble Bash, and Midnight Pool. In 2007 it also produced Prince of Persia Classic, a remake made under Ubisoft's license. Employment expanded during this period, rising from around 230 workers to more than 300 in 2008 and to approximately 415 after a major recruitment effort in 2014. In 2009 the studio introduced two important Gameloft franchises: Dungeon Hunter and Modern Combat. Its 2010 releases included Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Dungeon Hunter II, Gangstar: Miami Vindication, and Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus. Asphalt 6 added Adrenaline mode, while Modern Combat 2 became one of the studio's most critically acclaimed mobile releases. Further releases included Gangstar Rio: City of Saints, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, Dungeon Hunter Alliance for PlayStation 3, Asphalt 7: Heat, and Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour. The Montreal team later developed Gangstar Vegas, released in 2013, and Dungeon Hunter V in 2015. From 2016 to 2021, the studio operated through a difficult period for several online games. Modern Combat Versus, Dungeon Hunter Champions, Overdrive City, and Endless Survival eventually lost server support after poor commercial performance. Gangstar: New Orleans also performed less strongly than Gangstar: Vegas, although it continued to be available. Despite difficulties affecting parts of the wider Gameloft network, Gameloft Montreal did not undergo the same scale of mass layoffs or closure as certain other studios. The team released Lego Star Wars: Castaways for Apple Arcade in 2021. The studio's most important transition began in 2022 with Disney Dreamlight Valley. Released in early access for PC and consoles, the game combined life simulation, exploration, quests, decorating, and character interaction in a Disney and Pixar setting. Its reception and commercial performance exceeded expectations, making it the most successful project in Gameloft Montreal's history and prompting a stronger focus on PC and console development. A physical edition was announced in 2023. In 2024 the studio revealed that it was working on a Dungeons & Dragons game for PC and consoles. It has also continued expanding Disney Dreamlight Valley and developing an original open-world survival property. The studio's current identity consequently spans two eras: a large legacy of mobile franchises and a newer ambition to create sustained, cross-platform computer and console experiences.
