Overview
Fluorsid S.p.A. is an Italian industrial chemicals company whose business is centered on inorganic fluorine derivatives and associated materials. Its principal historic production complex is at Macchiareddu, in the industrial area of Assemini near Cagliari, Sardinia. The company also has or has had production, commercial, and logistics activities elsewhere in Italy, Norway, and Bahrain. Its products serve industrial customers in aluminum, special steels, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, construction, cement, and related sectors. Fluorsid was founded on 17 April 1969 by Enrico Giulini in connection with the Genna Tres Montis fluorite mine at Silius, in southeastern Sardinia. Its early activities focused on synthetic cryolite and aluminum fluoride, while the Macchiareddu complex was developed for drying, bagging, and briquetting fluorspar. The company initially operated within Sardinia's fluorite-mining economy, which expanded during the postwar period as older lead and zinc mining declined. A wet production process was used until 1988, when the company shifted toward dry production. The international regulatory crisis surrounding chlorofluorocarbons and the 1987 Montreal Protocol contributed to a downturn in parts of the fluoride and hydrofluoric-acid industry. Fluorsid subsequently separated its mining activities from its production and commercial operations. From 1990 onward, the business concentrated on manufacturing and marketing fluorine derivatives while sourcing fluorspar and other raw materials internationally. By 2006, its raw-material supply was entirely imported, including material from South Africa, Morocco, and China. During the 2000s and 2010s, Fluorsid expanded the Macchiareddu site and pursued vertical integration, energy recovery, international acquisitions, and greater exposure to the aluminum market. The site added sulfuric-acid production in 2002 and a second plant in 2013. Waste heat from the exothermic sulfuric-acid process is recovered to generate steam and electricity, supporting the site's energy requirements. Additional aluminum-fluoride capacity was installed in 2008 and 2013 using newer reactor technology. The group's expansion included the acquisition of ICIB in 2010, giving Fluorsid a position in hydrofluoric acid through the Treviglio plant in northern Italy. Noralf in Odda, Norway, was acquired in 2016 for an investment reported in the source material at approximately €12.5 million; the facility was described as one of Europe's major aluminum-fluoride plants. In 2017, Fluorsid acquired a 50% interest in Simplis Logistics, a Bahrain-based logistics platform serving Asian markets. In 2018, the group acquired Alkeemia and the former Solvay facility at Porto Marghera, which produced hydrofluoric acid and calcium sulfate. Fluorsid later sold Alkeemia and the associated assets in October 2021. In the same year, it established Fluorsid Deutschland through a 50% investment in CF Carbons in Germany, but sold that investment in October 2021 as part of the same divestment process. The group presents its subsidiaries under the Fluorsid commercial identity while retaining separate legal entities and organizational structures. Core products include high-density aluminum fluoride, aqueous hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, synthetic cryolite, calcium fluoride, and several forms of calcium sulfate. The latter is marketed under the Gypsos trade name and is positioned as a material for construction and cement applications. Fluorsid's business model combines specialty and basic inorganic chemistry with by-product valorization, international sourcing, and industrial-scale production. The company is privately held and associated with Fluorsid Group, a broader holding structure that also owns Cagliari Calcio and has interests in other sectors.
History
Fluorsid emerged from Sardinia's postwar fluorite and barium-mining economy. Sardinia had a long history of mineral extraction, but the decline of lead and zinc mining after the Second World War encouraged entrepreneurs and public institutions to develop fluorine-related activities, particularly in the Gerrei area. Enrico Giulini obtained mining concessions beginning in 1953 and founded Fluorsid on 17 April 1969 at the Genna Tres Montis mine in Silius. The original company manufactured synthetic cryolite and aluminum fluoride. It also developed infrastructure at Macchiareddu, near Cagliari, including a plant for drying and bagging fluorspar and a facility for briquetting fluorite for steelmaking and wet-process applications. The company used wet processing until 1988, when it moved to dry production. The international debate over ozone depletion and the restrictions introduced by the 1987 Montreal Protocol placed pressure on industries linked to chlorofluorocarbons and some fluoride intermediates. Fluorsid's mining base subsequently entered a period of difficulty. From 1990, Fluorsid separated its production and commercial activities from the mining operation and focused on fluorine derivatives. Rather than relying on local extraction, it began importing raw materials from international sources. By 2006, imported feedstock accounted for all of its raw-material supply. The Macchiareddu complex nevertheless remained central to the business and was expanded as the company sought increased capacity, process improvements, energy efficiency, and diversification toward aluminum-related markets. A major part of this development was the addition of sulfuric-acid production. The first plant started in 2002 and a second plant was added in 2013. The process uses molten sulfur and recovers heat as steam, which is directed to turbine generators. The site also added aluminum-fluoride production lines, including newer double-bed reactor technology in 2008 and 2013. This configuration allowed Fluorsid to combine chemical production with recovery of energy from an exothermic process. The company broadened its geographic and product base through acquisitions. ICIB, an Italian hydrofluoric-acid producer, was acquired in 2010 and operated through the Treviglio site. Fluorsid acquired Noralf in Norway in 2016, expanding its aluminum-fluoride capacity through the Odda plant. In 2017, it acquired half of Simplis Logistics, a Bahrain-based logistics platform supporting trade in Asian markets. In 2018, Fluorsid acquired Alkeemia and the former Solvay site at Porto Marghera. That facility produced anhydrous and aqueous hydrofluoric acid as well as calcium-sulfate products, and in 2021 it was selected for a European Union Project of Common Interest concerning innovative lithium-battery cells and systems. The group later reversed part of this expansion. In October 2021, it sold Alkeemia, the Porto Marghera assets, and its 50% stake in CF Carbons, a German business established through Fluorsid Deutschland earlier that year. CF Carbons was associated with production of chlorodifluoromethane, also known as R22, used as a feedstock for certain fluoropolymers and fluoroelastomers. The divestments left Fluorsid focused on its remaining fluorine-derivative, sulfuric-acid, aluminum-material, and logistics activities. Fluorsid's subsidiaries maintain separate legal identities but have been unified commercially under the Fluorsid brand since 2019. The group is controlled through Fluorsid Group, whose interests extend beyond chemicals. Its principal industrial identity remains that of a privately held Italian producer supplying inorganic fluorine compounds and related materials to heavy industry. The company's environmental record became a significant public issue in Sardinia in 2017, although the subsequent proceedings dismissed the positions of Fluorsid's senior management and concluded that the company and its top management were not responsible for the conduct at issue.

Controversies
- 2017Sardinian environmental-pollution investigationControversy
In May 2017, Fluorsid was implicated in an investigation concerning alleged environmental disaster, pollution, and improper waste handling near its Macchiareddu plant and at a storage area in Terrasili, Assemini. Authorities seized two areas and alleged that fluorine-bearing dust, heavy metals, and inorganic compounds had affected soil, groundwater, grazing land, and livestock. The investigation concluded in 2018 with 22 suspects, including company and public-control personnel. In 2019, eleven individuals accepted suspended sentences and fines, while the positions of the remaining eleven, including Fluorsid managers and Tommaso Giulini, were dismissed. The proceedings ultimately treated Fluorsid and its senior management as unrelated to the conduct at issue.
