Overview
Fidium Fiber is the current brand identity of the telecommunications business formerly known as Consolidated Communications. The company traces its roots to the Mattoon Telephone Company, established in Mattoon, Illinois, in 1894 by Dr. Iverson A. Lumpkin. Over more than a century, the business developed from a local telephone operator into a regional communications provider through repeated acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, and expansion into broadband, enterprise connectivity, managed services, and residential communications. The business operated for many decades under the Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company name, commonly abbreviated as ICTC. During the twentieth century it expanded by acquiring telephone companies and exchanges in Illinois, including operations in Christian County and Montgomery County, the Illinois Southeastern Telephone Company, and the Effingham exchange formerly operated by Illinois Bell. In 1984, Consolidated Communications, Inc. was created as the parent organization for ICTC, Consolidated Communications Directories, and Consolidated Market Response. The company later became associated with a broader Consolidated Communications corporate identity. A major ownership and strategic transition occurred in the early 2000s. Consolidated Communications merged with McLeodUSA in the late 1990s, and in 2002 the combined business was acquired by investors led by Richard A. Lumpkin, who had served as ICTC chairman and president. The company adopted the Consolidated Communications name following that transaction. It subsequently used acquisitions to broaden its geographic coverage and add network, enterprise, and consumer capabilities. Important transactions included the purchase of TXU Communications in 2004; North Pittsburgh Systems, including North Pittsburgh Telephone Company, Nauticom, and Penn Telecom, in 2007; SureWest Communications in 2012; Enventis Corporation, formerly HickoryTech, in 2014; Champaign Telephone Company in 2016; and FairPoint Communications in 2017. These acquisitions gave the business operations across a large number of United States markets. Its service portfolio has included broadband internet, traditional landline telephony, voice over internet protocol, pay television, home security, web hosting, wholesale data connectivity, and business communications. For enterprise customers, the company has also provided managed and hosted services, cloud offerings, information-technology services, and data-network solutions. Fidium Fiber emphasizes fiber-based broadband and consumer connectivity, while the wider operating business has historically served both homes and organizations. Consolidated Communications became a public company trading on the Nasdaq under the symbol CNSL in 2005. The public-company period ended in December 2024, when Consolidated Communications Holdings completed a merger with Condor Merger Sub, a subsidiary of Condor Holdings LLC. Funds managed by Searchlight Capital Partners and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation participated in the ownership consortium. The transaction resulted in the resignation of the existing Consolidated Communications board and the installation of directors associated with the acquiring entity. The company finalized its rebrand to Fidium in September 2025. The Fidium identity represents the consumer-facing evolution of the business toward fiber broadband and related digital services, while the company’s legacy operations and accumulated network footprint remain rooted in the Consolidated Communications organization. The brand serves residential customers with internet, television, telephone, and home-security services, and serves business customers with internet access, voice, managed and hosted services, cloud solutions, and information-technology offerings. Its operations are concentrated in the United States rather than the United Kingdom.
History
Fidium Fiber descends from the Mattoon Telephone Company, founded in 1894 in Mattoon, Illinois, by Dr. Iverson A. Lumpkin. The original local telephone business expanded gradually and, in 1924, adopted the name Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company. Under the ICTC identity, it acquired telephone companies and exchanges in Illinois over subsequent decades, including businesses serving Christian County and Montgomery County, the Illinois Southeastern Telephone Company, and the Effingham, Illinois, exchange purchased from Illinois Bell. In 1984, Consolidated Communications, Inc. became the parent organization for ICTC, Consolidated Communications Directories, and Consolidated Market Response. The company’s later corporate development was shaped by a merger with McLeodUSA in the late 1990s. In 2002, investors led by ICTC chairman and president Richard A. Lumpkin acquired the business, after which it adopted the Consolidated Communications name. The company expanded beyond its historic Illinois base through a series of acquisitions. TXU Communications was acquired in 2004. In 2007, Consolidated purchased North Pittsburgh Systems, bringing North Pittsburgh Telephone Company, Nauticom, and Penn Telecom into the organization. The 2012 acquisition of SureWest Communications extended its presence to markets including Roseville and Sacramento, California, and Kansas City. Enventis Corporation, formerly HickoryTech, was acquired in 2014 and added operations in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and North Dakota. In 2016, the company acquired Champaign Telephone Company, a business communications provider in the Champaign-Urbana area. The 2017 acquisition of FairPoint Communications further expanded its footprint across the United States. The resulting business provided a broad mix of telecommunications services. Residential offerings included internet, television, telephone, and home security. Business and wholesale services included internet access, voice, data transport, web hosting, managed and hosted services, cloud products, and information-technology support. The company operated in numerous United States states and combined legacy copper and telephone operations with newer broadband and fiber infrastructure. Consolidated Communications began trading publicly on Nasdaq under the ticker CNSL in 2005. In December 2024, it completed a merger with Condor Merger Sub Inc., a subsidiary of Condor Holdings LLC. Investment funds managed by Searchlight Capital Partners and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation participated in the ownership structure. The transaction ended the company’s public listing and resulted in a new board appointed through the acquiring entity. In September 2025, the business completed a rebrand to Fidium. The new identity places greater emphasis on fiber broadband and consumer digital connectivity, while the underlying company represents the continuation of the long-established Consolidated Communications telecommunications business. Fidium’s documented service scope includes fiber internet and related residential offerings, as well as business data, internet, voice, managed, hosted, cloud, and IT services.
