Overview
Fiat Powertrain Technologies was an Italian powertrain engineering and manufacturing organization created by Fiat Group in March 2005. Its formation followed the dissolution of the strategic alliance between Fiat and General Motors and brought together Fiat activities related to engines, transmissions and other powertrain systems. The organization served as a group-level center for the development and production of propulsion technologies rather than as a conventional consumer-facing vehicle brand. Its technical scope included diesel and petrol engines, transmissions and axles. The business operated across automotive and industrial applications, with activities that extended beyond passenger cars into commercial vehicles, off-road equipment, marine propulsion and power generation. This breadth reflected Fiat's effort to consolidate engineering expertise and manufacturing assets that could support several vehicle and machinery businesses. The wider Fiat powertrain heritage associated with FPT included several notable technologies. Fiat research produced an early automotive variable-valve-timing patent in 1960. The group later developed common-rail diesel technology, whose patent was subsequently sold to Robert Bosch, and introduced the MultiJet diesel-injection system. Later developments included MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve actuation, the compact TwinAir two-cylinder petrol engine and the Euro Twin Clutch transmission. As part of the partial and proportional demerger of Fiat S.p.A. into Fiat Industrial S.p.A., Fiat Powertrain Technologies S.p.A. was divided into Fiat Powertrain and FPT S.p.A. The industrial and commercial powertrain activities were subsequently separated from the original organization and continued under the FPT Industrial identity. FPT Industrial later became a brand of Iveco Group, while the original Fiat Powertrain Technologies entity no longer operated as the same unified corporate division. History
Fiat Powertrain Technologies was formed in March 2005 as a Fiat Group division following the breakdown of the Fiat–General Motors alliance. The new organization consolidated Fiat's powertrain and transmission activities, creating a centralized structure for the design and manufacture of engines, transmissions and related drivetrain components. The business drew on Fiat's long-standing propulsion research. A Fiat automotive variable-valve-timing patent dates from 1960. The group subsequently developed common-rail diesel technology, later selling the patent to Robert Bosch, and introduced MultiJet diesel injection. Further developments included MultiAir valve-control technology, the TwinAir two-cylinder petrol engine and the Euro Twin Clutch transmission.
