Overview
FactSet is a United States-based financial information and software company serving professional users across investment management, investment banking, brokerage, wealth management, hedge funds, private markets, risk management, and related financial-services activities. Its central proposition is the integration of market, company, portfolio, economic, ownership, fundamental, alternative, and other datasets with analytical applications and collaborative workflows. Rather than requiring clients to assemble raw data from multiple vendors and build their own processing tools, FactSet has historically combined licensed content, proprietary processing, software applications, data delivery, and client services in a single platform. The company was founded in 1978 by Howard Wille and Charles Snyder after the two worked together on Wall Street. Their original concept was to deliver usable computer-based financial information directly to clients. Early FactSet output was delivered on paper, sometimes by messenger, and the first product generated a concise company analysis report from an external database. The business later moved toward electronic delivery, spreadsheet integration, screening, proprietary-data management, and networked financial workstations. These developments helped establish the workflow-oriented model that remains central to the brand. FactSet's principal platform supports real-time and historical market data, company and security research, portfolio construction and analysis, performance attribution, risk measurement, scenario analysis, screening, valuation, fixed-income analysis, news monitoring, and research collaboration. The company also supplies implementation, business advisory, data delivery, index, portfolio-data-management, transition, and learning services. Its clients include both buy-side and sell-side professionals, such as portfolio managers, analysts, traders, investment bankers, risk officers, and wealth advisers. The company expanded internationally during the 1990s, opening a London office in 1993 and a Tokyo office in 1995, and subsequently built a global operating footprint. It became a public company on the New York Stock Exchange in 1996 under the symbol FDS. Over time, FactSet broadened beyond its original workstation through acquisitions and product development in research management, execution management, order management, performance and risk, client reporting, environmental, social and governance data, identifiers, and cloud-based portfolio workflows. FactSet competes with Bloomberg, LSEG, S&P Global, and other providers of financial data, research, analytics, and workflow technology. Its differentiation is based on combining broad content coverage with configurable applications, data interoperability, service support, and integration into institutional investment processes. The company has also pursued cloud infrastructure, marketplace distribution for third-party data, and artificial-intelligence applications, including tools for knowledge retrieval, workflow assistance, and investment-banking content creation. FactSet remains an active public company headquartered in Norwalk, Connecticut, with products and services used by financial institutions worldwide.
History
FactSet's origins date to 1977, when Howard Wille and Charles Snyder worked together at Faulkner, Dawkins & Sullivan on Wall Street. As computing began to change financial research, they believed clients would benefit from receiving processed, usable information rather than raw data that required separate programming and transformation. They founded FactSet in 1978. The early business produced company reports from licensed data and initially delivered some information on paper. Its operating model gradually shifted toward electronic delivery and direct client access. A major early technical development came in 1981, when FactSet enabled data to be downloaded into VisiCalc spreadsheets. This reduced manual steps and made the service more useful for analysts. Screening capabilities were introduced in 1984 and expanded through Universal Screening in 1988, allowing users to define their own criteria. In 1989, the Private Database Service allowed clients to combine proprietary information with FactSet data for customized analysis. FactSet introduced a Windows product in 1990 and moved its headquarters from New York City to Greenwich, Connecticut. International expansion began with London in 1993 and Tokyo in 1995. In preparation for its public offering, the company adopted the name FactSet Research Systems Inc. in 1995. It listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1996 under the symbol FDS. The company expanded its application range during the late 1990s with Portfolio Management Workstation, Economic Analysis, Company Explorer, the DIRECTIONS interface, and Online Assistant. Twenty-four-hour telephone support was added in 1999. Wille stepped down as chief executive and chairman in 2000, and Philip Hadley became chief executive and chairman later that year after Snyder served temporarily as chief executive. During the 2000s, FactSet developed products for portfolio returns, style and performance analysis, risk, proprietary time-series databases, real-time news, quotes, and sell-side research. It introduced IBCentral in 2004 and consolidated its Connecticut offices in Norwalk. The company also expanded its content through acquisitions and licensing arrangements, including the Thomson Reuters WorldScope database, which became associated with FactSet Fundamentals. In 2009, FactSet combined several earlier applications, including DIRECTIONS, Marquee, and IBCentral, into a more unified FactSet platform with shared workspaces and faster analytics. It also incorporated short-selling information from Data Explorers. Partnerships and acquisitions during the following years broadened the company's capabilities. These included Market Metrics, StreetAccount, Revere Data, Code Red, Portware, Vermilion Software, CYMBA Technologies, BISAM, and Interactive Data Managed Solutions. Together, these transactions strengthened market research, real-time intelligence, industry classification, research management, execution management, client reporting, order management, performance, risk, and wealth-management workflows. FactSet continued expanding its data and technology ecosystem in the late 2010s. It opened an office in Shanghai, launched Open:FactSet Marketplace for third-party financial and alternative data, and entered an enterprise market-data relationship with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. In 2020, it acquired Truvalue Labs, adding artificial-intelligence-driven ESG signals derived from unstructured sources. In 2021, it acquired Cobalt Software, joined the S&P 500, and announced the purchase of CUSIP Global Services from S&P Global. More recent activity has focused on cloud workflow software, identifiers, portfolio operations, artificial intelligence, and investment-banking productivity. FactSet's current business combines data licensing, analytics applications, enterprise software, workflow products, implementation, advisory, and support services for a global professional audience.
